start stop switch question

01 superjet recently installed msd inhancer / 2deg timing advance/ coffman sizzler pipe and lightened stock flywheel. Ran fine, started and stopped fine several times riding. The last 2 times I've rode, first time ran fine till I put it back on trailer. Went to start it to clear water out and I had nothing on start switch. Not even a clicking sound you get when the relay goes bad. It was just dead. But the battery is fine. After 15-20 times of trying start button it fired right up. The next time I took it out it started fine every time I tried it, but would not stop the engine with stop button. I pulled the kill switch and it took about 3-5 seconds for it to shut off. I started it back up and every time I go to stop it, it takes minimum of 3 times hitting the stop button for it to shut off. I have checked and cleaned the contacts a month prior to the above mentioned changes due to trouble shooting the relay going bad, (second relay in 2 years) Any thoughts??

Have you checked/cleaned the connections of the clip between the switch and where it hooks up to the ebox? I just had the same problem a month ago with a switch and it turned out to be a bad connection in the wiring clip.

Buy a new start/stop switch. Been there and done that 3 times in 3 years on 2 different SJs. The little brass contacts inside the switch get worn/nasty-u can dis-assemble and clean them, but that only buys u about a month.

I'll put the $ down for new, but thanks, always good to know someone's got your back!

I have taken 2 apart and cleaned them and the problem is-they do good for a few rides and then let u down in the worst possible place. Nationals 2007 for me about 20 minutes before competing! Learned u can rob a switch off of 1 ski and install it on another in 15 flat. lol

I have one spare that u can borrow for a while if u need, I really don't want to sell it. I bought mine from Parker Yamaha, fast shipping and cheapest price around.

Gil Whats the advantage of a new switch over the JSS reworked switch? I sent my switch to JSS last Nov and It failed last month. I would pull the teather cord and the ski will not die. The first time it did this it freaked me out and I thought my ski was going to idle over to the other side of the lake.

From what I can tell if you kill your ski by hitting the red stop button that will keep the brass slides in the teather switch from arcing out so much and going bad, by simply pulling the teather cord.

I was in a big hurry as usual and did not want to wait on my old switch being reworked. John reworked my neighbors switch last fall and it is doing great! (it just took 2 weeks) My dum azz is a NOW personality and I have NO patience w/it comes to waiting on parts.

When Paul built my Lamey in Feb 08, crankworks was slow shipping my crank back to him so I had them do counter to counter shipping(150.00 for a 6 hour airplane ride) so I could get my new motor 1 day sooner. LOL

Oh I forgot to add I sent my switch back to JSS and he redid it for free. He now uses a Stainless Plunger and a better O ring method than the old one.
THe switch left my ski and was back on in a week. THe only thing that went wrong was that I wanted a few carb parts and John didnt call untill he had sent the package with UPS.

So we will see how long round two switch lasts.

I really like John and John's work. Not bashing him at all.
