Surfriding St. Pete Beach Riding?

I just found out I'll be heading to St. Pete Beach in August for a wedding. I'll be staying at the Dolphin Beach Resort (4900 Gulf Blvd). I've been told there is a public beach right next to the resort (4700 Gulf Blvd). I'm wondering if it would be worth towing the skis down. Can anyone help answer these questions:

Are there public access ramps nearby? (I don't have a beach cart)
Is it legal to ride at the public beach right next to the resort?
Any fresh water hookups nearby for flushing and rinsing?
Anything else I need to know before riding in this area???

Thanks for the help. Just want to see if it's even an option where I'll be staying.

beach launching is very tricky down there. there is only one place I know of that you are allowed to do it and it's on the intercoastal not the gulf side. Also, our waves suck in august.

There is a public boat ramp very near that location across the street from the Don Cesar Hotel.
From there you can ride out into the gulf and over by the resort however there will be swim area only buoys all along that shore line aprox 100 yards out. You can sometimes float the ski into shore without trouble but you better not have the engine on in the swim zone or you are asking for it...The resort might have an outside hose near the parking lot...

Ft. Desoto or leave it at home.

South from the dolphin to Bayway East/West (Look up Don Cesar, that's the turn). Go east ($0.75 toll) to Bayway N/S. Go south all the way to Ft. Desoto ($0.45 toll). You can turn onto the beach just after the toll and launch for free (idle speed out of the flats) or go over the bridge to the 1st right turn in to the boat area. Boat ramp parking is $6 with a trailer and has a fresh water flush station. The boat ramp is directly across from the beach I mentioned, but being unfamiliar with the area, I'd suggest just paying the $6. Approx driving time is 20 mins or less.

At either launch, you are in Bunson's (sp?) pass. Go west (stay out of the grass flats) from the launch to get to the gulf. Just before entering the gulf, to the south is Ft. Desoto North Beach and to the North is Shell Island. Shell island is only accessable by boat so you have full access to the gulf side of the island (don't go back behind the island, it sucks back there). To the west of North beach is a sand bar that can have some ok surf, but the surf will most likely be flat. Most of Ft. Desoto it's ok to go to shore with a boat if it's not a busy weekend (lots of people out they will run you off, but you can go to shell island).

There are other options but I wouldn't recommend them unless you are riding a couch. That other launch mentioned in a previous post wont put you in good riding. It would be intercostal and no beach. All of St. Pete Beach is swim zone only. So if it's a stand up, it's Ft. Desoto and that's about it.

The other option would be Veteran's Park (by Baypines VA), which you take west out to Johns pass. That'd be about 30-40 mins drive and it's about 20 mins from the launch to the beach (lots of idle speed). Then there's lake seminole in Seminole (about 40 min drive) and Dunedin's Causeway (about 1 hr, where most of the Duck Pond guys ride).

Like I said, your best bet is Ft. Desoto ramp, ride the sand bar just off North Beach and hang out on Shell island (they're like 200' apart).

If you make it down this way with the skis, you can contact me close to that time and I may be able to go with you. I don't care if it's flat.

EDIT: If you use the boat ramp across from the Don Cesar (not sure exactly where it is, have never used it), it will put you in the intercostal. A short ride south will bring you to the point of Pass-a-grill, which is directly across from the north end of Shell island. You can ride and hang out anywhere on Shell island, but don't go north to St. Pete Beach. So I stand corrected, there is another option other than Ft. Desoto ramp.

the ramp behind don cesar is close to shell island and near beach riding but it's one ramp and parking is difficult (no parking lot). The beach launch near the old 10 cent toll isn't too bad, I've ridden out to shell island from there. Ft desoto is probably the best bet and you could probably get away with beach landing at north beach if you wanted a break or to trade off with other riders. I wouldn't want to ride from Ft. Desoto boat ramp to st. pete beach though.

FT Desoto ramp is good, stay in the channel until you get out to Gulf. I think it is $6 to park with trailer.

The causeway (beach) launch is fine, done it plenty of times. Ride out the intracoastal and up St Pete Beach.

Our tanker chasing spot is only good if it is not low tide.

WD is this the spot? That would be decent if you can find a spot to park.

yep, that's the launch near Don Cesar I was talking about.

EDIT: your last link has a street view of the Don Cesar launch but your arrow is placed at the inter-coastal beach launch. You can actually launch from either side of the road. the other side is a little nicer and harder packed.

Wow thanks for all the advice everyone! I guess we do have some options afterall. My only concern is that both of the skis I'll be bringing have never seen salt before (at least to my knowledge). Having to ride a ways from the launch spot to our beach seems risky lol.

For clarification, can we ride in front of the Dolphin and the public beach next to it, or will we have to stay in the areas you guys listed above?

Thanks again...

you can ride past the swim zone which is about 100 yards. You can't ride inside of the swim zone anywhere. Pretty much the whole gulf coast of pinellas county is a swim zone.

You can not ride near the beach infront of the dolphin. It is a swim zone. You can ride out past the swim zone but there is no reason to do that, as you can't ride in to the beach to see anyone. Ft. Desoto is a great park. Just ride there and hang out at Shell Island. It's worth the drive to the Desoto ramp.
