Squarenose Newb

Ive been riding since january, I got a sqaurenose now, 6m6, stock as can be. I dont got the money right now for a 701, rather wait couple more months for a screaming deal.

I have a few questions. Should I get a aftermarket quick turn plate, like the blowsion 1 inch shorter, or just drill out my stocker? I have read about a nozzle mod, but cant find a good link to it that explains in depth. I believe i drill out the nozzle so the nut is farther forward? Is that all?

I am going to be doing foothold eventually, probably at the same time I swap in the 701, around december or january. I want to armor up the ski a lil. It may see surf once or twice in its life, just for me to try it, being the ocean is like 3 hrs away. Rest of the time is flat water and river riding. Is carbon fiber all its hyped to be, or will i be good just getting heavy glass? Where are critical areas to put it on a squarenose? I doubt Ill ever sink enough cash to be doing flips, but Im def not gonna stop till i roll it.

Whats a better pole? Round nose? AC? I like roundnose look, but im thinking that might break also? Ive seen 2 dif style alum so far, one was shorter and rounder looking, I also like that style.

Im not concerned with pipes and carbs and all that, ive ridden a stocker 701 that wasnt fully tuned, and can tell once i just have that, along with holds, steering and pole mods, my ski should be capable of rolling.

Welcome to the X and to the wonderful world of standups! It is truly the best hobby I have ever had.
I think you are on the right track with mods to your ski, eventually I am pretty sure you will want a Factory Pipe "B-Pipe" and some porting done to your 701, but that can definitely wait.

See post # 5 by Suva on this thread for Steering Mod & D-Cut, both highly recommended.

Also, if you are going to do footholds check out this excellent deal Sjetrider has going. This is a good time of year to get that done, and you will never find a better deal on brand new holds.

Well, I looked at post 5, and its a dcut plate, but his nozzle looks identical o mine? I still am at loss as o what I do to my nozzle. Am I drilling something? Am I just bolting it on a different way. Bear with me, im not full retard, I work with steel for a living, but all the posts i find are a vague description and them saying they liked it. No one does write ups it seems.

Mine looks identical to the pic with the riva plate not dcut in that link you posted.

I did the mod, and also moved it to the max setting on the turn plate. O man what a difference. I sunk the ski doing stabs and turn subs, and had to swim it to shore and pull the plugs, and dump it out. Needless to say, next mod is a bilge. Thanks all.

Carbon Fiber/Graphite is much stronger and lighter (win/win) than any other material to reinforce your ski with. Welcome to the X.

Ok, Im going to be ordering glass and some 615 hyolds friday. I also at this time want to armor th ski with glass or carbon. I do not have funds for an engine, but that can be swapped later. I have some questions. I want to do this right, I like this hobby.

I want to armor the nose area, I ride rivers alot, and am deathyl afraid of subbing or stabbing it intop the ground and sinking in a crazy current. My ski still has the rubber yamaha piece, and the cover for gas tank Dont really care if they go bye bye, but for now, they are on there. I have noticed small chips on the bottomo lip of the nose, small chunks missing, and a small crack on one side. QUESTION. Is it ok to lay the glass over the 2 layers and join them together. Like start at top layer, nd wrap it around to bottom?

I have small dings in the very rear area where it angles down. I want to lay a sheet or 2 of glass on these areas also, as I ride rivers and a ding across a rock on the ass is gonna happen from time to time. Is this a normal mod?

I want to glass the engine bay. Do i do carbon fiber or normal glass, moeny is a factor, but if for some reason carbon fiber is just o so much better than normal glass, and you guys say its worth it, i can get it. I was also told not to glass he bottom as it can make the engien not line up? Where are the areas i want to add it to?

I plan on going 701, prob b pipe eventually, and some porting, and do rolls, hit boat wakes, and maybe 2 or 3 days a year go to the ocean. All advice is appreciated.

I went with glass, It's been a while but if i remember correctly the only advantages of carbon are saving a few oz of weight and looking cool. Doing the sides of the engine bay is probably the most important re-enforcement. some also do the sides of the tray like i did. but most don't unless they already have to re-foam. The pole bracket is the other area that often cracks. The bottom of the hull really isn't a weak point. It's really the top deck that is the weak part. Most only do the sides of the engine compartment. I only put 4oz cloth on the bottom of mine for looks more than anything and it doesn't exactly look that great either. The only issue with the engine not lining up would be if you glassed over where the motor mounts bolt up to. as long as you mask those and cut the glass/carbon around them you wont have any issues. Its really not necessary though.

Sounds like you have the right idea with fixing the nose piece. I wouldn't worry about sinking the ski that way though. most boats sink from loosing their hoods. Even then they wont "sink" they just get swamped and go nose down. unless you remove all the foam, then they will sink like a rock. here are a few threads you might find useful..

You will be fine with glass no need to add carbon bling bling factor, its not a ski show out there unless you just like spending money.
