square v. round

besides looks and engine (cuz i think we all know that can be changed) what are the pros and cons / differences between the 2? basically what makes everyone steer towards a round nose besides it just being newer?

I like the handling better - but that's just MHO. More aftermarket parts availability.
Stronger hull.

I like the roundnose style poles better, but they can be adapted to the square. The Roundnose deck is stronger, it's real fiberglass.

Both are nice if you ask me. I seem to like the way squares ride a bit better, but they're not much different, a small mod here or there can make all the difference.

I have a square with an x-metal pole on it and I love it. I dont notice much difference at all when riding the 2. The square just needs much more re-enforcement done to it. The bottom is identical on the 2.

after readi ng the responses so far it seems to me that the only real difference between the 2 seems to be predominantly personal preference......... so again can someone please explain to me why i keep reading posts where people say that it is like throwing money away to mod a square heavily?

as it seems to me that spending money heavily modding a square (which can be gotten much more easily and cheaper) would seem to be money better spent

your prob right. but its like owning an old style beamer over a new style beamer. every one wants the current style.

yet some people like the older styles and keep rocking them.

its all up to you. personally i think there is nothign wrong with a square. with the money you are saving you can use it other places.

Some people always have to have the newest shiniest sh*t. Some sort of bling complex, I suppose.

(especially as a relative newbie) You're going to have tons of fun no matter what SJ you're riding.

this is leading somewhere i promise lol............ im an old school kinda person when it comes to thi type of stuff thats why im askin what it is that the squares are lacking

what the squares lack, in my opinion, are the abundance of shorter aftermarket poles that were made for the square. this is reasonably easily fixed by adapting an aftermarket roundie pole (x-metal!) to a square. or you can mod a square pole. most of the squares on the water have stock length poles and i think thats why people say they handle shyttier than their round (with shortened pole) does.

also,
after having gutted many a square and round, i do feel that the square hulls are assembled better by the factory.

theres nothing you can do on a round that you cant do on a square, is the bottom line.

it just looks better on a round:biggthumpup:

but steves watercraft factory top deck will mount perfectly on a square.

The steering is definately the main difference though. I have a -3 xmetal pole, and I'm using the round nose bracket on it. The only problem with it is, the square nose bracket area is angled whereas the round nose bracket area is flat. The problem this causes is pole cannot extend as far forward as it would on the round. The square also needs re-enforcing in the bracket area. with a tight pole, you will notice the entire bracket area moving when moving the pole on the square unless its re-enforced.

um if the look of a square is what im after why would i change the top deck?

assuming that the top deck is the hull portion above the bond line
