Anybody know whats the stronger hull
the square or the round
Which holds up to falling from the ski and landing on the water the best

Why would a round be stronger ?
Is it fiberglass top deck ?

Except for the early 97 GP I always thought that Yamaha made the first year hulls thicker and as the years went on they would try to reduce weight.

Maybe not.:dunno:

The bottom is the same between all models. The roundie top deck is glass, whereas the square top deck is crap.

I have always heard the 96 roundnoses were the strongest---don't really know if this is true, but I have heard/read it several times.

A fe years ago I stripped a 1996 hull and a 2002 hull and it looked to me like the 2002 was stronger. Just my guess, it had more glass around the hoodseal. Both hulls were mint. The crappiest hulls I've ever seen were from 1994 and 1996. Just my experience... I don't think the year matters as much as how they were used (although Jr.Magoo's says the newer black ones are definitely thinner).

As long as you reinforce anything properly, I dont see a problem with it. Sqaures of course have the tray delamination problem and stress cracks usually form on the rear tray walls, and along the center of the by the fuel tank. As long as you know where its weak and where to reinforce, I really dont see any difference, as the differences people will notice may be flukes, but as the bottom hull is the same shape, it will land in the water the same. If you were to round the sides it would help 'break' the surface tension however.

I reinforced my square and it has had some serious pounding this season......no poblem. When you make a hoodliner for the ski make sure it reinforces under the handlepole channel and then wraps down around the bottom of the hood. That helps keep the hood from flexing and cracking.

MY 96 is a tank. I think it was a fresh water ski before I got it, so it wasnt beat on. But since then, I have thrown the ski away a number of times, landed upside down a few times. "learned how to do roles" , and broke the stock pole 4 times. The last time the collar snaped in two. My boat is not reinforced anywhere, the handlepole bracket surface has very small spider cracks, so I will probably lay a thick layer of Biaxle over that and thats it. I probably should reinforce but I am hard headed about adding the weight. I am still trying to do things to save more weight.

The sides of this hull have been reniforced already

do you have pictures of the hood liner you did
that may make it stronger i have seen other guys with broken square hoods before

I just threw my liner together but it really works well. Attached to the sides and under the handlepole channel. Intakes on the rear and drainage/intakes below that at the base of the hood.

That's kinda the way I did mine. If you make and epoxy your new liner to the center channel it will help give a bit more overall strength. I used panel fusor from McMaster to glue my entire liner in, then layed a strip of 8.5 oz. cloth over the seam all the way around to help add a little more strength.

I didn't take any pics of the finished liner glued in, but I can if you want to see it.

The cat in the 3rd pic really helped

I used two layers of 8.5 oz for the liner, then where I installed my vent hoses I added two additional strips from side to side to make that a little more rigid. I also used 2" ribbed pool hose for my vents.

I do think my '01 RN has a stronger deck than my '95 SN though. It's more beefy under the hood seal and handle pole areas.

However, Nick rode the hell out of his SN for how long in the surf before he finally ripped the nose off and went to a round. I think I read a post where he said his next build up would be another SN though.

I have pics of how I did my squarenose hood liner in my user gallery. Only wish I had done handholds & reinforced the inside of the hood also.
I really overdid it on the liner though, I could flip the hood over and stand on the liner and it would not crack. I used the expensive epoxy resin around the sides to adhere and the cheaper regular resin for the middle part.

Edit: the liner itsself must not need to be strong though, my wammer 8 hole hood on my roundnose has a flimsy thin liner.
