Blaster Spline Grease

What are people using for drive shaft splines on the b1/SJ? I lost my moly paste, but I've seen them strip with that too. I got Green Grease crammed in there right now. It had this foul black runny stuff in there when I pulled the pump to anti-sieze everything, probably from the factory back in '93.

The grease isn't at fault when splines strip. It may be the lack of grease but I don't think it's ever because someone used the wrong stuff. I use Mercury's extreme grease, which is all purpose. If it's good enough to use on a 30k 400hp verado, it's good enough for me.

One thing I think is over looked is the midshaft orings. They are cheap enough to replace every couple years and are very important for keeping water out and grease in. I've always wondered why our splines are not greaseable. I have thought to put a zerk fitting behind the coupler many times. Stern drives have a greaseable coupler in this exact manner.

Yamalube Marine Grease without a doubt. It won't wash out like most greases.

Never-Seez Mariners Choice is another option but can be messy to work with. It's impossible to wash out of clothing so be very careful with it.

I own both of the above and use Yamalube Marine Grease almost exclusively for my skis. I've yet to have it gall threads or splines, and I prefer it for cleanup. I use Never-Seez Mariners Choice for submerged applications like boat lifts.

Any grease that is designed for marine use especially those most resistant to water washout are best. 37's advice is a good choice. Green grease works well also. Periodically regreasing is a good idea. The black runny stuff you have is old greases mixed with water and god knows what else.

As Tzane said midshaft Orings are there to help keep water out and should be replaced over time. Pump, midshaft, and motor alignment are critical to splines lasting, but B1/SJ splines will wear over time regardless especially with big pumps and motors and freestyle abuse.

Thanks for your replies!

Yea I'm gonna pull out the midshaft here and do a good inspection and cleaning of everything.
