Something took a dump. Is it a good time to upgrade ?

2 days ago I downloaded some windows updates (yep, that was smart) and right away things started to go wacky.
Lost all sound even though it's all working properly according to status and windows is having a really hard time starting.
Maybe the sound card took a dump or some drivers got replaced, I don't know.

Anyway, this computer is 7 years old. Even though it has been trouble free, what might have been good once is ancient right now. Both my ROM and CD drives have been acting up for some time which is slowing down my hunt for correct drivers off CD's and in general I could use more memory.

Is it a good time to upgrade or just scrap it and start fresh ?
Don't need the latest and greatest.

If it is 7 years old it is not worth upgrading... but in the mean time, if you are running Windows XP do a "system restore". Pick a date several days before you noticed the problem. It will undo all the updates you just did.

First thing I did was the restore. As a matter of fact, I did it twice since the shait went down and still the same thing.

I would do the all mighty "format d" trick and be done with it (the joy of downloading all those service packs) but I just don't trust my CD drive.
