So I have Solas J currently but I have a 12/17 Skat-Trak Swirl w/race finish, balanced and 3mm cut-back on the way.
My question:

Is there going to be a noticeable difference between the two on my SN that has the following setup:

62T Case/61X Cylinder 701 ported (~185psi in each)
Greater Yamaha Girdled Head
Moto Tasinari V Force II Carbon Fiber Reeds
Riva Intake Manifold
Dual 44 MM Mikuni Carbs
Factory B Pipe with a Mod Chamber

You should have a lot more bottom hit and hook up. That J- is a super steep prop 14.7/18.5 and acts even steeper than it is.........

IMO you will like the swirl much better, it will stay hooked up much better. Not sure 12/17 is correct, I would think more like 13/16, but what do I know:dunno:
either way the swirl is better

I road another tank and some today on the new ski and I can tell the Solas J has kick freaking ass middle range, the bottom end is actually very close to stock feeling but damn, once it spins up hold on!

Looking forward to the 12/17 if it ever gets here

J's are nice props w/ your setup. If your were riding big surf all the time I would say keep it. But the swirl is awesome on bottom and you will give some up on mid/top but who cares.

I love the older "J" & "I" (hollow hubs) "J"'s about 1.8 .lbs and a Skat's 12/17 is a about 2.5

This makes different in throttle response. Kind of like a lighten flywheel.

Hey Kevin, this one was just installed and looks brand new so I don't think it's an older one (came on the ski I got).

I'll have the other impeller here soon I'm hoping so I can compare.

Thanks!

What Kevin means is the J & I were the classic "go-to" prop for superjets. Their design has been around a long time and is still relevant today.

As for the weight difference (swirl vs slimline), almost all of the added weight is centered at the hub so the response difference is negligible. Besides, for riding in the chop or ocean, I prefer the added weight from a heavier rotating mass (flywheel, prop). This helps with extending the life of crank bearings and offers better "back stretch" hook up (more linear).
