"im looking to purchase and wondering why a waverunner vx deluxe
costs $11,595 here in ontario yet if i cross the border into the US it only
costs $8,699? i own yamaha already and would like to own again but i cant understand why the price is so much more here in canada. recently i had to but a starter motor for my superjet and in canada the dealer wanted $575 yet i got it in the US for $300 shipped to my door, even if the dollar was not on par how can you justify these price differences"

i just got a response

"I am writing in response to your e-mail regarding the difference in price
between Canada and US Yamaha products.

It is impossible to simply answer this type of inquiry regarding pricing
between US and Canadian products.

There are many variables and fluctuations and the exchange rate today is
not necessarily the rate fixed when the prices were initially negotiated.
In Canada different import expenditures, volume purchasing (300 million vs.
32 million), and different associated costs of operating in Canada vs. the
USA. Such dilemmas are shared by Yamaha and other importers and
manufacturers.

There are a few interesting articles in the Globe and Mail regarding this
and they indicate that across the board Canadians pay more than US
consumers (they calculate 24 per cent across the board). I can understand
your frustration but I'm sure you realize the Canadian dollar rose 27 per
cent in '07 and has fallen and tumbled since. We negotiated with our
factory long before these significant changes. We will try and assist our
dealers and customers but firms in Canada do have different costs and
expenditures. I am sure you will agree that we also need to support local
business to make sure we have a dealership in proximity for all our
servicing needs.

We also believe our prices are compatible with our competition in Canada
and like most firms we do not consider the US to be our market. Even when
their dollar was much stronger we did not advertise to US consumers and
encourage them to shop in Canada.

Regards and thank you for contacting us. I do hope you find the Yamaha of
your dreams and I naturally hope it is purchased at one of our fine
dealerships in Canada."

so i just responded to the guy

"i work in sales for a portion of Bosch and we sell products in Canada, we always have issues in regards to across border business and work closely with our sister company in the US harmonising prices where needed. so i know this issue very well.

here we are talking $3000 difference on an $11000 item, i dont see how that is justified. the dollars have not been that far apart in a long time.

even on spare parts it makes no sense, the dealers dont stock the parts here so to order the parts from the us is just as convienent as buying from local dealers as it takes the same amount of time to get the part, but costs less from the US

i love yamaha products, but i cant justify buying them in canada

if i was buy a waverunner i would go across the border to buy it, as a short drive will save me $3000, plus gst and pst is the same wether bought here or in the us then crossing the border.

im sure you get this more and more but i dont see what yamaha canada is doing here to make sure i would buy locally, im giving buying signals i want to buy, but i dont see why i would pay $3000 for the exact same product."

be interested to see if he replys

wow... i got a reply already

"Good afternoon:

There is an article in today's Globe on the matter and Ron Charles of the
CBC just did a story on it too. I am afraid we do not view the US as a
competitor and have very different costs here in Canada and believe our
prices are competitive with other Canadian retailers."

i replied to him saying i was considering purchasing in the us so that would mean that they are a competitor to yamaha canada ... his response

" I'm afraid we do not agree. Cross-border shopping is seldom to a Canadian
retailers advantage but the decision, as a consumer, rests with you"

Yea these prices here suck, always have
I bought an oil tank for a kawi in the U.S. for $35 .It was 120 in Canada. when I cotacted kawi they told me it was due to different suppliers that were contracted to make the tanks

You might have to pay duty as well 6.1 % I believe.

the yamaha rep even admits that the dollar has been close since 2007 and says about negotiated prices.. this is total B.S. i work for a european company and we have differing discount and exchange rates on a yearly basis to ensure we are competitive and make sure we are inline with the us pricing, on some product lines we even sell it in US funds to ensure the pricing is clear in north america

oh and i live in canada.. but im still british.. so the man can shove it back up his own a$$

pissing up a rope, they want impulse buyers not you bro... There is obviously enough of them to mke them say, "sorry we disagree, do what you want". So save yourself tons and buy USED in the US and be done with it.
When you are done with it sell it at a bargain price to an impulse buyer in Canada and make $$$$$$.

All ends well for YOU!!!

Im with you on this. Though i drink Yuengling and Sam Adams and not Moosehead or Molson i think that is BS. buy one in the US send him your pink slip and the link to this thread. It will send huge shock waves of the chain. i promise you that.

It's pretty ridiculous. I live on the border so I do a ton of my shopping in the US due to this fact. Canadian retailers are not adjusting prices even after our dollar has been >90% of the US dollar for a while now. Good for you for saying something to them.

steve you might tell him we live in a global economy now and they had better see the writing on the wall if they want to stay in the game. then again, how much of a riding season do you have up there? I guess its equal parts, jetskis-4wheelers-snowmobiles? eh? lol

check out european prices.they also are much higher than here.taxes, import tariffs, volume buy, overhead, payroll taxes etc all play a role in final product pricing.
