SN steering cable headache

So I did some searching on this and I came up with a couple of results, but I'm still having issues and Im not buying any new tools, I'd rather just buy a new plastic piece...


Anyways, talking about a 91 SN, got the cable all the way out until the plastic nut by the pump. Pump is out and I've been turning on the plastic thing for an hour I swear, still not coming out. It looks like it wants to and I swear there should only be one more thread or...

So yeah, any ideas or advice? I took off the first part of it, now I'm stuck on the piece that has threads on both sides, the part that actually screws into the hull..

Get that nut off.
Hold the hull side with pliers, turn the nut.

just a thought.......I'm sure you thought of it already......but did you take off the part that hooks onto the ball at the turn plate???

Well, I didn't actually, but the way it seems to work when I'm looking at it, I won't need to do that unless I need to replace the plastic thing. Unless it HAS to come out I'll just leave it alone.

But as far as turning the nut, there isn't enough room for pliers in there. It seems like it's one piece. Well two pieces. The first one came off, it looks like a cap. The second part is the piece screwed into the hull. That part has unscrewed about three or four threads and now it just spins for life.

If having the cable actually out makes a difference, I'll work on that in the morning, if not, I'm lost....

Phill, guess I won't be needing your hull, this one is in decent shape and has motor mounts, we'll see what happens. Hopefully I won't be needing a third, lol.

The "cap" or the "nut" that has been mentioned is all that needs to come off. The other part is the rest of the thru hull insert that is mounted to the hull. Once the nut is off the cable should be able to pull out towards the pump. Take off the steering ball caps from both ends of the cable first. You will also have to remove the stop washer and retainer clip from the old cable at the point where it was inserted into the thru hull insert once you get the cable out. I have replace several of these and they can ususally be removed without too much problem.

Stop here. The cap is all that has to come off. Push the cable back out and take the white plastic clip off.

But my new hull does not have the second piece that attaches to the hull, my new hull is missing it, which why I'm trying to be careful about it.

I'll go take some pictures of it just to make sure we're on the right page. But I'll start with the cable ends and getting that all out of the way...

Here is a pic and I'm having some issues getting the ends off, seems to be an 8mm wrench, the only wrench I can't seem to find, perfect huh....

Anyways, I'll do some searching and see what I can come up with and go from there. I'd rather not order a whole new plastic piece, but I guess I might need to...

cable is out and free from the hull. Still stuck on the white piece though. Is it two pieces, does it stay with the hull? I'm so confused, I keep spinning and spinning and it goes nowhere, not back not back into the hull, not all the way out, just like three or four threads showing and that's it. I can pull as hard as I want and it stays put.


Oh and I need this part, my new hull does not have this white plastic piece, I can just see threads going into the hull, which is why this is such a pain in the ass...

Eh....I believe that piece is attached to a tube/hose inside the hull. Not sure they separate.

hmmmmm, well, I posted on pwctoday as well, maybe someone will chime in, I'm gonna go back and look some more. There are threads in the new hull, so I know it threads in somehow.

Such a stupid little part, basically holding me up and getting everything switched over..

I'm pretty sure that there is a plastic nut on the inside of the hull. There is in the runabouts. If so, I don't know how you are going to get to it without hull surgery.

The thru hull insert that your picture points to is a removeable item. It should screw back into the hull. If it will not thread in and tighten or screw out then you have probably broken the receiving threaded piece inside the hull that is glued in and should be fixed. Maybe it broke loose in your attempts to get the cable out. If you can ever get the insert out maybe you can reach through the hole and apply a little glue to fix the inside portion enough to let you tighten the insert again. Otherwise you might have to perform some hull surgery and fix it the hard way. You have to remove the cable end before you can remove / install it through the hull insert. The insert should not have to be loosend or removed, just the cap that you took off first.

I still have no idea what this piece looks like since I've only seen it from the outside. Maybe I'll just break the hell out of it, just to get it out, so I know what to ask for from the dealership

If someone does not have one from an old hull then its time to get one from the Yami dealer. The same insert was used on several runabouts and all SJs I believe. Here is the Yamaha part number for the insert only on a 96 SJ, no washers, caps, just the insert there are seperate part numbers for all those little pieces.

The outside is all you are going to be buying, the receiving threads are part of the hull and you would have to cut a hole in the hull and repair it with some kind of matching threaded piece. Get the dealer to let you look at the parts microfiche and you will understand what I am saying. Save all the rest of the clips, washers, caps, seals, etc. You will save yourself buying redundant parts..

I can't figure out why it wouldn't just unscrew, but that looks like what I need. Threads still look good on the newer hull, so I think I should be fine, I hope at least. I'll go struggle with the one on my old hull some more anyways, hopefully this isn't some $80 piece, haha.
