Super Jet SJ Won't Start

Took my ski to the lake to tune this weekend. Everything was running fine, came in after an adjustment and the ski wouldn't turn over when I tried to start it again. While I was at the lake all it would do was click once when I hit the start button. Got it home and tried again to find out that the bolts had backed out of my starter and my starter wasn't bolted in at all. I put the starter back where it needed to be, got it bolted in and tried to turn my ski over, just a single click.

I tried hitting the starter again today and instead of clicking the starter made a grinding noise. I'm assuming the starter is just completely shot and needs to be replaced, but is there anything else that could cause this? And what is the clicking sound coming from the ebox caused by?

Clicking sound in ebox is the starter relay/solenoid. Loose connections cause overheating/arcing in both solenoid and starter. Either could have been damaged.

Tried the starter one more time and it sounds like the starter is spinning but not engaging the bendix. Probably going to have to pull the flywheel cover this week to take a look and crack the ebox to see if starter relay needs to be replaced.

I pulled the starter and tried to crank the engine to see if the starter spun. The solenoid clicked in the ebox when I did this. Why does it sound like the starter is spinning when it is attached to the motor but when I pull it the solenoid clicks instead? Does this indicate which part (starter or solenoid/starter relay) is bad? If not, how can I test both components? I don't want to pull the flywheel cover to check the bendix if I don't have to.

starter can still be grounded if you clamp the ground wire to it (vise grips work). run the ground from the battery to the starter and you can run the positive from the battery straight to the starter to see if it spins (tap the terminal with the cable end). you can also check the solenoid with a multimeter.....check for 12volts going to the starter wire while holding the start button.

Starter does turn with my fingers. It is pretty smooth. I will check the solenoid with a meter to see if that's the issue. If the solenoid was bad would the starter still turn?

no....it wouldn't jump the connection. there would be no voltage going to the starter to turn it over. if you have one of those 12volt battery jumper boxes you can clip the negative to the starter body and tap the starter positive terminal with the red clamp to see if it spins under power.

A single slick is usually bad starter. Just directly jump the starter from a battery with it out of the ski and see if it spins. If it doesn't its bad. If it does, you may have a bad relay (solenoid) in the ebox.

Also check your ground cable and main battery cable in the ski. I chased a no start for 3 or 4 hours once before realizing it was the ground cable.

Does anyone have pics of the washer/spring/washer that should be in the flywheel cover to hold the bendix? I pulled my cover yesterday and didn't see anything like that. Should it be resting in the recess in the cover? Haven't had to replace a bendix before and want to make sure I have the right parts before I put it back together. I'm thinking I probably don't have this unless I'm not looking in the right place, so if anyone has a spare set laying around pm me.

I forgot!
I think I have a spring then the washer. Not washer spring washer. If you look at a parts catalogue it should show what is correct. I may have it incorrect but it works. The springs do get old and can get pinched down. Make sure it's not in the bottom of your hull or under the flywheel cover anywhere. I just order that stuff from my local yami dealer.
