SJ starter prob(need help please)

k my buddy has a modded 701 square with a riva pipe the one with the v shaped manifold and the huge chamber, actually its factory pipe rive. Anyways here the first question(the starter makes a turning noise but doesnt engage, what could be wrong with it or the bendix??) we finally got the pipe out after a long time and cutting the rubber hose between the mani and pipe. We cant the the mani off now, how do you get the last two bolts out that are the top middle of the manifold, socket doesnt fit and I can only get them to turn 2 times with an open end wrench, whats the deal? Do we even need to get it off to get the starter out, how does the starter come out on these skis and what could the prob be? I dont think its electrics cuz it turns but prob just doesnt engage on the flywheel. Hed a appreciate any help cuz he wants it fixed like anyone else asap. thanks

to get that manifold pia bolt(s) i had to grind an open end wrench and then it's easy

hah good idea, well do that tomorrow. one step outta the way now..

sounds like a bad bendix to me. if it is, there is no need to remove the starter, just remove the flywheel cover and flywheel and then cough up the dough for a new bendix, i just had the same problem.
