SJ SN Vent line broke, how does it work ?

The plastic inlet of the filter vent broke off and it looks like I will have to replace the filterit.Therefor a couple of questions.

How important is this for the engine/running of the ski ?

What can happen if it is disconnected ? What is the little valve in the line for ?

How does it actualy work ?

water vent seperator thingi

Its the little plastic seperator which is mounted on the side where the exhaust is....

Its purpose is to keep water out of the fuel tank at the same time letting it vent. I would find another one and replace it.
