SJ performance mods reliable?

I was wondering if when you do mods to a Super Jet like MSD & Big Bore kits... if they are still as reliable?

I know with alot of stuff when you modify them they become very unreliable & I was wondering if that was the case with these?

And are there any performance mods that won't affect reliablity & ones that will?

if you have the boat set-up right with an enhanced, head, pipe, and rejetted carbs it will be reliable.

anything will be reliable as long as you take the proper maintenance and upkeep steps with a modded set-up

I disagree, I believe motor bolt ons and a propper port job will still be reliable including:
Head up to about 185psi comp.
Good port job/ clean up not radical
Carbs
Pipe
MSD enhancer
Billet or lightened flywheel
and of cours handling mods
Pole
steering
pole bracket
intake grate
ride plate
prop
foot holds
tubbies (if installed correctly)

These things can be done and the boat kept VERY reliable.
I have seen OEM pistons / crank / cases / cylender & OEM milled head w/ 185 comp last 10 years of weekly riding with the above mods done & the cylender is STILL :bigeyes:eek:n its original bore and has had 1 set of new OEM pistons installed and one hone job as it is now 11 years old.

but was there proper maintenance on the boat?

like i said if it is taken care, it will be reliable.... just depends on how radical you go with the mods

In that case, the question should be "How reliable are performance mods if I don't want to perform the required maintenance?"

with simple bolt ons, what is the required maintence?

If you run it in salt water, add 2 cloves of garlic to the gas tank within 24 hours.

If you plan to store it for a long winter's rest, cover it up with an official (must be official) Franklin Mint Elvis Presley Memorial Afgan Throw Rug.

If you live in a warm and humid climate, place a Barry White CD in the engine compartment.

I know I'm missing some more, but can't quite think at the moment.

check the muffler bearings after each ride and make sure the powerband is adjusted properly

I pulled the flywheel cover cap (thought it unscrewed but it actually just pops out) and topped it off with oil.

I used Wesson. Should I have gone with synthetic?

Loose or worn muffler bearings seem to bring the ski's down in salt water for some reason, more than fresh water. I'm switching to ceramic from here on out.

Don't forget to feed the shaft seals, they get hungry after 50 hours or so of operation.

A well built engine/driveline will be reliable, but will need regular maintenance more often such as new rings, piston bearings, crank replacement. How much more often depends on the power being made and hours of operation, how much water gets injested over time, etc.
