So last summer as some of you know I was having with my ski not starting after I had been riding it. If I let it sit for a half hour it was good to go. I stole the coil out of my wife's blaster last fall and it seems to have fixed the issue. So I either need to get a new coil or let jss replace the plug wires. I am hesitant to go with jss since I don't know for sure that's what the issue was. If I do decide to get a new one what am I looking at price wise?

have you trimmed the wires back at the plug ends?

do that first, the coils rarely go bad, the wires do, and yours shoudl be fine, all my square and fx boats are older than yours and have the original coils.

I can walk you thru testing with a meter, or rewiring it also if you want to do that.

new coil.

SXR coil

$61 at ronayers.com

Ive heard the sxr is the same/better/cheaper than the yami coil.

If you get an OEM Yamaha coil, it's $112.11 on DGY.com. Part # 62E-85570-00-00

I suggest you go with an OEM SXR coil for $60.78 Part #21121-3713

The SXR coil is a bit better than the Yamaha coil. Incidentally, both are built by the same manufacturer. The insulation for the plug wires is better on the Kawi coil, and it is much cheaper.

Note that the SXR coil does not come with plug boots. I suggest getting MSD terminals and plug boots. You'll have a much better coil than the Stock Yamaha crap in the end.

The only reason I think the whole coil may have gone bad is because it was 100% consistent, after a decent ride it would not start. It never ever happened unless I had been riding it so it makes me think maybe the coil itself was over heating?

it is possible.

Ive just not seen any go bad, its always the wires them selves.

how ohms do you get across the primary ( small wires) and secondary ( big wires) of it?

the reason, I ask.

measure it, write it down,

put it in the oven on like 200 for a couple of minutes, and check it again.

it is possible the varnish, or epoxy insulator on the windings has a breach, and its effectively shorting the winding when it warms up.

I dont recall them getting very hot in operation though.

I get mine from Watcon, because I like Randy and he's close enough to me to make for fast & inexpensive shipping.
Blowsion also has them.
Jetskisolutions probably has them, too.
Any of the bigger a/m parts dealers should have them.
MSD should have them.

i am not to sure on this as i drillout and replace my own leads and from what i have expeirienced a sxr coil has wire lead and a resistor boot and measures the same resistance as yamaha yamaha run carbon lead with a non resistor boot similar to the msd boot if you run kawasaki coil and a msd boot you will have very minimal resistance
and you need a certain resistance i think???
But i have been told kawasaki coils are a better thing just need a resistor boot

The resistor has one purpose: to cut down RFI. The same can be achieved by running resistor plugs.
You don't "need" the resistor boot.
