SJ Help. Starting to drive me crazy.

Building my nephew his first SJ. Nothing major. Build from a stock 97 RN. 150 in each hole.

List of engine mods

Ltd B Pipe
Pro-tec CDI
Vortex FA

Water and jetting are spec for Factory Pipe which I have used in the past with no issues. The issue is that the ski will not plane off. It acts like it wants to go, but just bogs badly right after you take off. Never really gets fully on plane.

I've been through the spectrum with the carbs and besides getting to the point of starving for fuel or just too rich, it never changes.

Changed plugs - Nothing.

Yanked carbs thinking that maybe I missed something - Nothing. Filters are clean, getting plenty of fuel. All good.

Maybe it is the reeds? Reeds are fine.

Replaced in line fuel filter - Same results.

Pulled temp sensor from head - Same results.

I'm leaning more and more towards the CDI since I've just about eliminated everything else.

For such a simple build this thing is starting to take its toll. I'll get my nephew some water wings before long....

did you check the reeds?

look in your manifold and see if any of them are broken. i had the same problem and that is what happen to me

I haven't checked the timing. I forgot to add that the boat ran flawless as a stocker. This is why I was thinking CDI as it is one of the few things I added.

Didn't bypass fuel selector. Honestly didn't think of it because the carbs appear to be getting plenty of fuel as it is not dieing on the top end. Just bogging its a** off. That is something simple to try though. Thanks.

Get a Gunson Flash tester or something similar to test the strength of the spark at the plug if you think that may be the culprit.

sounds like your rev limiter adjuster is turned way down. Had this happen with a buddies MSD Enhancer, we installed it right before a race. Put the ski's in friday afternoon and bwaaaaaahaaaa. No Go. Pulled the electbox apart and that was it.
