Single Trailer to Double Conversion

Has anyone converted a Single Triton to hold a B1 and a SJ? I'm looking for the smallest / lightest trailer I can get away with. I know I can get it to work if I build outriggers over the tires but then I'm then curious about how much weight the axel and wheel hubs can support on bumpy South Carolina roads. I'm sure tire wear is another factor. On average I drive 30mins to the lake (highway) and about twice a year I drive 4hrs to the beach. I don't need a toolbox/fuel rack. My constraints are mainly driveway space (length), and hitch's light duty tongue weight (250lbs)

Any recommendations or horror storys I should be awair of before starting this project

ScottS and I both converted some big Triton singles to hold 2 standups. Either of our trailers would handle a Blaster just fine. Mine has the leaf springs and Scott's has the torsion axle. The torsions are way too stiff and bounce the hell out of his skis. I went with lighter leafs so mine would float better and it rides like a dream. If I ever need to handle more weight, I can upgrade from 750lb leafs to 1000lb for under $20.

Tire wear has not been an issue but I did start with new wheels and tires. We built the trailer to drag our skis the 4 1/2 hours between from Charleston to Jacksonville so everything was done with long hauls in mind. So far I have zero complaint.

As you can see from the pics, we decided to split the cost of a 20' 2"x4" aluminum tube to base our bunks on. It was $200 for the whole thing and well worth the investment. It was the perfect way to get whatever width we needed as well as raise the bunks above the wheel wells at the same time.

All the build details are here;

P.S. Before someone asks, the fifth bunk is so a single ski can be centered perfectly. ;)

Here's a few shots of Scott's Triton Elite. Beautiful trailer and the axle and tongue are fully adjustable so you can tailor your ride way you want without cutting up the trailer. Only downfall is the stiffness of the torsion axles.

How large are you trailers inside framing? I have 2 Triton's and they both are 36", your seem larger?

I think the Triton Elite is around 36" where the LT is 44" if I remember correctly. The frames are much narrower on the trailers with torsion axles.

My trailer wasn't wide enough for the bunks. We used PT 4x4 and PT 2x4, Galvanized hardware and Stainless Eye bolts. The 2x4 is mounted vertical with the bolts running vertical through them. We counter sunk the bolts with a hole saw so they wouldn't stick up into the bunks. Covered with home depot patio carpet using contact cement and stainless staples. The springs were rusted so they were replaced with 500lb springs. Been using the trailer at least 3 or 4 years now with no issues.

HX fits on either direction. We just slid it over from a single trailer so it was easier like you see it. HX rail sits over the SJ rail, same with a B1. This trailer has carried almost everything. Fits any 2 SJ or X2, or either one with one HX or B1 (wont do 2 HX or B1.) We've done SXR with X2 and SJ but never 2 SXR or SXR with either of the big boats.

All bunks are about 13" apart. When I only have one of my skis, I put it in the center so the trailer is well balanced.

Stand ups usually sit up against the box with bow ropes taught. HX being backward is throwing the balance off a bit.

@Vumad, how far is your typical ride to the water? I ask because of the 500lb springs and smaller trailer tires. If that setup worked for 4 years, it looks like just about any trailer will be fine. Also do you rotate which side the heavy ski is on for better tire ware, or can you not tell any difference?

By 500lbs springs I mean 500 lbs per spring. The trailer is sprung at a total of 1000lbs. Superjet with fuel is about 350, HX with fuel is about 450. It's pretty close to it's rated capacity. Tires have a 600lbs rating each on them

Usually its a city ride max 50 MPH up to 30 miles, usually about 15 miles. Tires have been dry rot cracked for 2 years and I haven't packed the bearings since we got the trailer almost 10 years ago. No issues. Diameter shouldn't be an issue. Those tires are 4.80 x 8 and my big double trailer is still just a 5.70 x 8. Same diameter, just wider tires.

Im surprised with all the fancy work on the trailers you guys just run straps front and back rather than bow stops.

I would if it could be a simple bow stop and pin like on a Superjet but there's no bow eyes on the Matrix so why bother. I could do winch post style but more stuff costs more, weighs more and clutters up the trailer more.

Stoltz makes one where a pin goes through the u-bolt. I am going to try that on my chan. It does clutter up the front though as you said.

I actually bought a couple of those already and added a U-bolt to the Superjet but the eye on the Matrix doesn't stick out far enough to work so once again, I was stonewalled. I choose to not fight some things that fight back. As much as I like the added strength, security and ease of tie down it would offer, a cheap and easy solution has escaped me...I have my eye out for a new extended bow u-bolt so maybe if I ever stumble across one of those....

I guess I should have double checked that the ubolt I installed will stick out far enough before I installed it. Fingers crossed....

I have a Triton Miss Ski-tow converted to hold two skis. I know it fits 2 Kawasakis, but would probably be too small for a Blaster and an SJ. Anyways, I figured I would show you how mine is set up. I still need to get a couple pieces of aluminum to finish up the bow stop.
