Simple effective battery box

Made this, this evening because I wanted something better than the stock plastic battery box. It's all aluminum with stainless hardware. Countersunk the bottom screws so the battery would sit flush. I want to clean up the top plate a little better but it's functional right now and should hold up well.

I just bought some 1/4"-20 x 6.5" stainless bolts and the countersunk screws from mcmaster carr when I was placing an order for some alignment shims but I bet pump bolts would work too. Unforunately, I did realize that I forgot washers until I was assembling it so I'll have to go out and get some of those later.

It's a tight squeeze for the battery so it won't slide around any but I'll see if I can squeeze in something on the top and bottom for vibration damping. I cut the plates just slightly too small and had to shave off about 0.010" of the plastic cap that overhangs on the battery so the bolts would clear without force.

I'm not running a stock tank now but I snapped that plastic piece off of the battery box a while ago when I was running the stock tank. I just ran one strap from the front right mount to the back left mount and it worked fine.

I don't know about making these and selling them. Unless I were to make a bunch, the cost of materials and something for my time wouldn't make these much if any cheaper than the big name boxes and I'm certainly not making stuff at their quality.

Thats cool, I was just working on a similar idea, but with bolts and lock wahsers from the top down. The bottom pc has brake pressed threadded inserts. That way they can't spin loose. The turf is a good idea. Mine is very similar to the Polaris style of battery mounting set up.

I'm sure lowes or home depot would sell some sheet metal but it might be pricey compared to what you can order online. I looked at a few places for bolts over 6" and local places have them but in larger diameters.

I was originally planning on using the inserts as well but as you can see from the location of my holes, I didn't have enough space for them. The biggest lesson here is make sure you have enough material to work with around the battery.

Waternut that looks great - added to my list of projects for sure.
In Bakersfield there is a scrap metal place that sells stainless and aluminum cheap by the pound. Perfect for this kind of small project.
