i want to shorten my pole but ive heard its better to get a rn pole to shorten because its easier i heard [ because sn poles are glass i think is the reason] but i have an a/m alumnium one on my ski, should i jet sell that and get a stock rn one or just shorten that.

do you think cutting it and welding it back together will hold? i have a tig and a mig welder

You cant shorten them very much before it hits the hood. I cut mine in the middle and removed 1.5 without hood contact. You can also make or adapt a turn plate that moves the bars forward, I did both for -3.5".

if i were to shorten a sn aluminum pole i would take the section out of the middle then drill 1/4 holes around the top and bottom pieces about 1.5" from the cut. insert an aluminum sleeve "collar" into the pole and plug weld it in place. then weld up the seam....would be a lot stronger in my opinion...then at the back of the pole i would just clearance where it hit's the hood and weld in some fillers as the turn plate mounting area in sn pole's are huge.

welds can be stronger than the metal you are welding just make sure you get your puddle right tig in' it up.
you could cut it out then drill in some alignment pins clamp it together and do a nice big fatty V grind and fill,
kinda hard to make look real pretty but strong as hell.

i can get the measurements for the rn chinpad tomorrow when i'm with my ski.....i'd do it from the middle, then clearance the sides where it flares out to fit in the hood. but if you do it from the back be sure to move the cable stay forward an equal distance so you still have full steering throw. sectioning from the middle of the pole is tried and true. why mess with what we know works.

reshape the sn chinpad is much easier than try to make a rn chinpad fit the sn pole (imo), because the sn chinpad is much wider than the rn and the mounting is different

I cut out and moved the bolt hole for the turnplate forward 3". Steering lock moved forward 3" and rear of pole trimmed down.
