so could i get away with shortening it from the bottom?? the way it is made looks to be it has a thicker part to mount to the bracket that runs up to the foam. has anyone shortened the pole from there redrilling and then reshaping the bottom so the pole swings freely and locks in place??

From the bottom.

Don't expect "square".

After you cut the pole and shove it back into the bracket (with epoxy)....lay it back in place with the pole bolt thru,,,,

Yank it to be straight with the hood.

Then let it set up. Drill and rivet or bolt the next day.
BTW: pieces of aluminum street signs work well inside the bolt/rivet area.

It's possible to shorten a stock SN pole (not the way Dan is describing, he's talking about a RN pole).
But it's a labor intensive pain in the ass, doesn't look good, will interfere with the hood, and in the end you still have an ugly, heavy, and weak stock SN pole.
Convert to a RN pole instead.
