alright, I sold my 760 motor and need to ship it to California. What have people done to package them. I know of people building small crates, but what other methods.

I just got one shipped to me.
in a rubber maid container.
plywood in the bottom, peanuts, and packing all around the engine, cardboard on top, and then the lid secured with packaging and duct tape.
anything other than a cardboard box.
I got an engine like that once too..

I'd take a reg size crate and cut it down. Cut the ends of the top 1x's and frame up with 2x2's around the small crate. That's how I ship furniture. ......or you could frame a small box with plywood and bolt the motor to the plywood. I'd use some big bubblewrap around the motor on the inside of the box or framed in crate too. Shipping something like that is just a PIA. Good to see you finally sold that thing.
+1 For what he said on using a rubbermaid container.
Last one I shipped I too a piece of 3/4" ply wood, cut it to fit a cardboard box, bolted the motor to the plywood with the bedplate bolts. I then took two of the same size box (nice new ones not old soggy ones) and forced one into the other, dropped the motor in and filled it with bubble wrap and packing peanuts. It got there in the same condition as when I sent it.
you could contact SBT and have them send one to you. the boxes are foam filled to accomodate your specific type of shortblock as a nice tight fit. not sure how much they charge though.

I reinforce the box with thin plywood on all 6 sides. no complaints yet.

was thinking of the rubbermaid way, and put the motor in a garbage bag and then fill up the voids with expanding foam...

go to a local go kart shop they have sweet setups for engine crates their 2ft by 3ft i think and are a decent thickness plastic with a lid that interlocks in the middle and has a hole drilled on eihter side for wire ties to keep it closed.i just took some motor mounts and bolted them thrue the crate and bolted the motor in and was good to go

rubber maid containrer is the way to go. the motor wedges itself in the bottom almost no need for additional packaging.

When I sent my stuff to chucky I double boxed with high quality corrugated cardboard, and reinforced the corners with cardboard edging (edging was originally used to protect corners of packages being transported on skids). Inside was packed with styrofoam to prevent movement/provide padding. smaller spaces were filled with packed newspaper and packing pellets.
Everything got there perfectly, and was returned in the same boxes. No damage, and the boxes were still good to go.

I like the expanding foam idea. I have seen this on some heavy Jeep parts I bought.

Use the rattle can foam (Great Stuff) .......for the 2 part is too expensive!

I just shipped my motor to Jetworks and I used a cardboard box. I think it was a old microwave box. Inside the cardboard box I lined it with bubble wrap and then a couple layers of cardboard. The motor went in there and then the 6 to 8 inches around the motor was filled with bags of popcorn and foam chunks. Not just loose popcorn but ice bags filled with popcorn so that it can't move and let the motor shift.
