Sea-Doo operator killed on Shawnigan Lake
Victoria man, 25, hits head while wake-jumping
By Matthew Pearson, Times ColonistAugust 30, 2009
A 25-year-old Victoria man died of head injuries Sunday after a boating
accident on Shawnigan Lake.
According to police, two Sea-Doo watercraft were wake-jumping behind a
friend's boat around 3 p.m. One Sea-Doo accelerated at a high rate of
speed, jumping the wake and then nose-diving under the water where it
appears the man struck his head on his own craft, causing serious
injuries.
The second Sea-Doo operator jumped off his craft immediately to aid his
friend.
The unconscious man was taken to a nearby dock, where his friends
administered CPR.
When Brad Kornelson, the chief of the Shawnigan Lake volunteer fire
department, arrived on scene, he relieved the man's friends and
continued performing CPR. A dentist on the scene performed chest
compressions until more members from the fire department and B.C.
Ambulance Service arrived.
Vehicle traffic was closed while the man was transported by B.C.
Ambulance to the south end of Shawnigan Lake, where he was met by B.C.
Air Ambulance personnel.
The man was pronounced dead at approximately 4 p.m.
Kornelson said accident scenes can often be frantic, but the victim's
friends behaved calmly and responsibly.
"They were focused on providing the best possible care for their
friend," he said, adding this is the first fatality on the lake this
year.
Police say the investigation is ongoing. They are receiving assistance
from the RCMP's West Coast marine services and the B.C. Coroners
Service.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the accident.
