i just tried to use an "easy-out":banghead: to remove a seized bolt from my intake/reed cage that snapped off when i tried to take it out with a socket/ratchet. first i put on some penetrating oil and let it soak. then i started to tap the bolt for the easy-out to pull it through. the easy out friggin' snapped off too !!!! i went one size up with the easy out and the fun began. i guess it grabbed the side of the reed cage threads and jacked up the manifold grommet. DADGUMIT. if you have a reed/manifold piece for sale...PLEASE SEE MY WTB THREAD AND PM ME. and if u have a better idea for this P.O.S let me in on ur secrete.

You're using the wrong type of extractor set, this type of set will work better and has guides to hold the drill bit centered.

Also applying heat to the case in that area will help aid removal.

You can use a cobalt steel bit at low speed with a centering fixture to remove the extractor too.

I would not drill it from the bottom IMO.

i broke the same bolt on my ski. just drilled it out to use an extractor. extractor didn't work so i just drilled it out and re tapped it with the same tap and it worked fine. even torqued it to spec and it held.

i just dropped it off at a machine shop. they get $52/hr and acted like it was a big deal?! Because the easy-out is "case hardened" he said was trouble. he also wanted to know if it was o.k. to get "alot of grease and water" down the intake with the crank and rods still in it!!!! i said no and if that's the case don't do anything. the machinist said "we'll see what we can do." sounds scarey. i may be in the market for some 61X cases soon enough. pray for me. i'm holding a candle light vigil tonight at dusk. we'll all join hands and sing kum-bye-ya

I'd advise you to find a different shop.

I've used two shops for services like that, and they didn't bat an eye or acted concerned.

Yup.....takes little time to do it, too.
I broke off a head pipe bolt in a FPP B-Pipe manifold. Took it to a shop, and the guy welded a washer & a nut to the stump of the bolt and got it out quickly.

on the ones that were REALLY stuck, Id grab a Q tip and dip in the ZYGLO penetrant fluid, it was really oily and glows in black light, and penetrates like MAD.

it was used to find cracks in parts, but I also found it very good for wicking down around those threads.

between that, and the heat from welding, they come out about 99% of the time.

well...the dude told be at 2:00 it'd prolly be ready 'round 4-5 depending on what they "got into" it's a 30" ride from my house to shop. by the time i got home and said hey to the wifey i got a call from the shop saying it was ready! got it back and looks great and the oem bolts still fit great. i'll take it and say maybe i was lucky.
in any case, i'm a little concerned about my pistons. i had the head, cylinder, carb, mani and reeds all out when the bolt broke. took it to the shop like that. turns out the shop dude flipped my engine upside down and let it rest on the top of the pistons to tap out the broke bolt!? sound funny to you guys? the pistons look fine outside of something that looked like concrete dust on top of them. the bottoms of the pistons look good. no gouges from the cases or vice versa. should i be concerned at all?
