SBT... Sad But True

just pulled this loud 61x engine apart to find out that it has sbt pistons and an sbt crank:rolleyes:

all of the bearings sound like metal rollerskate wheels on the sidewalk and the crank smoked a thrust washer.

the pistons are still in good shape but id been an asshead to use sbt pistons, let alone USED sbt pistons.

anyone ever have this happen to their crank?

no clue. the guy "says" it was rebuilt 2 years ago but who really knows. i only bought the ski for the b pipe and misc parts. i rode it and it feels fine, just a little noisy.

That's the problem with used stuff, especially someone that may not have known how to take care of it, it's a crapshoot. You never know if it's been sunk a couple of times, and if it was how long they waited to get it cleared out and running, etc.

I thought SBT was fair game. Nearly everyone talked smack about them BEFORE they bought PWCT.

exactly! problem with 11 is that he's got his nose rammed so far up sbt's sparkplug holes that he would never see a difference.

There was just a long thread on pwctoday.com on the quality of SBT's cranks... you know, the ones that come with a 1 year no-fault warranty. Try getting that with an OEM crank!

So what's the point of this thread?

I no longer use rebuilt cranks by ANY rebuilder, What charlie is experiancing it common place will all rebuilds. espically if it's used in a built motor. So here are the options, OEM, Yes the most expensive route, or Wiesco/HotRods. a little more than the cost of a rebuild. All 100% new parts & I have experianced most coming thru truer than OEM. The life expecdency is close to oem, But much better than rebuilt.

Rember, in Life, you generally get what you pay for. parts for watercraft are no differant!

to the dismay of a few people here, the intention of the thread was not to bash pwctoday/sbttoday. i agree with keeping it on track. im referring to the trashed sbt crank in this engine and the fact that im such an avid sbt lover.:arms:

i was asking if anyone has ever had a wasted thrust washer on the big end of the crank like the one pictured in the first post. the journal bearings are nice and quiet and not pitted is what is weird. the main bearings are noisy, however. ive seen rods come apart and wipe out entire engines but ive never seen just a thrust washer go on the big end of a yami motor. just wondering what would cause it to happen.

From what I have found, when a crank starts to go out of index, a good ammount of pressure is applied to the thrust washers, failure is imminent at some point. although it happens to all 2 stroke motors, I have it happen way more often on Sea-doo motors, than any other brand.
I attribute that to the fact, with a rotary valve gearing & the spread distance, the torsional flex is greater on those motors

being a true and welded crank.... well, im not sure its been trued but its definately welded. lets pretend that it was true prior to welding. it shouldnt go out of index w/o breaking a weld, right?

or are you talking about general wear and tear on the bearings?

SBT is the warranty supplier here in the US for Yamaha. That should tell you something about their current rebuilds.

Now their stuff long ago when they first started out is a different story. I have had first hand experience with their first round motors and it was not a good experience at all(750 Kaw).
I'm gonna buy a SBT crank within the next few weeks. I post how it works out over time.
