All SBN 38's have 3 bolt holes, SBN 44's have 4 bolt holes, even the old BN's.
Look for a SBN 44, but you'll have to get a different intake manifold. You can also find a Keihin 42 and bore your existing manifold out to accommodate it.

They are called progression ports and they are there to fill the hole in the mixture between the idle circuit and moving to the booster.
You will be fine with either one. Just dont mix them up ir run different ones as a set of duals

I've seen that before. One 3 hole, one 4 hole. Drove a buddy nuts for a whole season til' he realized what somebody did to the ski.

Hard to change the shaft and why? Also anything on the fuel inlet where the fuel lines hook up on the carb and replacing them?

Your throttle cable may not work with the triple linkage, that's why you may need to change it. As long as there is a inlet and a restrictor in the outlet, you should be fine.
