Running issue- I need help.

Hey guys, i have a 61x. Protec rec Head, b pipe, lightened flywheel. 150 per hole with stock head. Starts better than any 701 I've ever had. No prime or choke, fires up perfect. Sounds a little "soft" on the trailer, like its not revving out like it should. Runs a bit smokier than my other motors. (i mix full synth 32:1 jetting is 142.5 hi, 120 low , stock needle and seat, silver spring) . in the water it feels like it going to pull, then falls on its face. Feels like it's missing at high rev/1.5-full throttle. I dropped to a 135 hi to see and it felt exactly the same. Any suggestions? Any tests ican run to narrow it down? Thanks. Frank.

Wouldn't a bad could affect start up? It starts cold instantly with no prime or choke. I just got this flywheel back from zero. I imagine if it were bad, he would have noticed.

Not necessarily. The cdi and coil go bad when people crank the engine over for compression testing or whatever without both plugs grounded. The magnets on the flywheel can go bad too, no way to test that really. But that's more common on a/m flywheel. May want to test the stator too. You can do that with a multimeter just search around and you'll find the procedure.

Ill search on testing the stator. That would be a huge bummer if the flywheel is bad, i just paid to get it lightened and drilled from zero. I have an extra coil i can try as well. Thanks for the advice, its appreciated.

I don't know
I would put the ground where it was originally and make sure that contact is super clean.
You can run a redundant ground wire from one of the ebox mounting studs (clean that area to bare metal) to the - battery terminal. The stator is only grounded to the engine by one small gauge wire.

I don't know where the original location was. I sanded/cleaned the surface and had contact. The ski cranked, so i bolted ot up there. This is an aftermarket that i assembled from bare. I mounted the e box with a stainless bolt.

The thick ground cable goes from the inside starter mounting bolt and wraps down below the starter to stay clear of the exhaust manifold, it then loops up by the engine I.D. tag and to a black plastic cable loop which is bolted to the flywheel cover close to the battery. Your starting issue is a very common symptom of a coil failing under load. Typically the issue is found within the secondary winding. Test the coil with a multi-meter for resistance by placing one test probe per spark plug boot at the same time. The values on the secondary winding are 3.5 - 4.7 k ohms. Anything above or below will require a coil replacement.

Thank you very much for the info! I don't have a starting issue, it starts better than any other 701 I've owned. It does however fail under load, the higher rpm, the worse it gets. I have a spare coil. I unfortunately have everything torn apart, but I'm going to install it and test. Thank you!!

No worries, it seems that it is never a starting issue when the coil goes bad but rather a 1/3-full throttle miss/hesitation/bog...however you wish to refer to it. Mine went through this, then it happened again to a friend, and again to another of his skis, all the same issue. Replaced the coil and no more issues.

Thank you very much for the help! I don't currently have access to an ohm meter, mine is broken, but i had an extra coil. I just installed it, I'll try to water test later!

I water tested, but i removed my pump to reseal my mid shaft/re align my pump and install trim. The silicone on my pump seal wasnt cured and it cavitated terribly. I will water test Tuesday.
