Most will turn down the idle so that the ski won't stay running unless you have a hand on the throttle.

I run mine without a lanyard and it will just do circles ten or so feet away from you. Never had a problem just wait for it to circle back and grab it.

Mine tipped sideways once and the handlepole flopped full up. It just stayed layed over and went straight away from me til my bro-in-law did a 180 and threw wake at it. Then it uprighted and started circling. I had to swim about 75 ft. Another good reason to always have a riding buddy.

Depends on where you ride also...I have my idle basically off and soon as I fall it stops .i mainly ride the Colorado river and when I used to have my 650s they would idle perfectly but against the strong current I had one idle so far away from me it was ridiculous ..or idle in a huge circle into the rocks. I know have a lanyard on my ski but I don't wear it .just have the idle set super low .only bad thing is if someone who doesn't know how to ride it that good will punch it for awhile and let off abruptly and it will stall sometimes.
