Rubber 'thing' on a mid-shaft housing...what is it?

Sorry, another dumb question. My SJ has been apart for 3 years and it wasn't even close to complete when I got it.

So, as the topic states, what's that rubber bumper/snubber/nipple thing that pushes into the hole on the mid-shaft housing. Is it there to support the cover that goes over the mid-shaft? Something else?

Sweet, thanks. My cover was broke and I pitched it when I disassembled the ski, so I couldn't even mock it up in the hull.

My buddy and I both ditched our coupler covers. Makes it way easier to access the bilge pumps, rotate the motor/driveline by hand, etc. Just make sure no wires or loose hoses can touch the coupler while it's running... zip ties are your friend.

Ya, been thinking of doing that, or making my own out of some polycarb I have laying around.

I run a non-hood modded squarenose and I get plenty of water under the hood... But when the pumps are spitting gobs of water out I usually let the ski empty itself before I thrash it again. i see your point, but I haven't been bitten yet....

Run your boat without the hood and watch how much water is being thrown up and around,not good

you probably have been bitten... just a little.... fraction of an ounce at a time.... it will take its toll.

...especially with a stock hood and "plenty of water under the hood". besides, who ever needs to access their bilge pumps??? taking 2 small bolts out with a 10mm socket seems easier than replacing a crank due to a bent rod.

if you need to spin the engine by hand, its usually because you think you ingested water. why would that be?

ill continue to run mine, even with my a/m hood, dual 500gph's and scupper.

none of the above does any good if the rod is brought to you by the letter, "L".

I had a small hole in mine when I got it. It did not matter untill I started to sub my ski. I started to get some water in it. It then started to chock out my ski. I found the prob by driving with out the hood on. I shot water up and out of a dime sixed hole and right in the carb. What are the chances right!!!!!! I have fixed the hole ha ha...

I will run one once I put a 701 in my ski (this winter).

For now, the 650 is my red-headed step child....
