Riva Ss Flat Pistons Help.

Guys,

I just got, 3 months ago, a "set" of 85's expensive flat tops from RIVA and decided to use it today...

When I opened it I realized that they have diferent design... one of the pistons is similar to WISECO and the other is like WSM (dark gray top).

The box show the same part # and also the stamped 8500 on top of pistons but one has something liek R&D YAMAHA PMC, bla bla bla...

How can RIVA sell diferent pistons with same part #??

Thanks,

Gera

cause they are ripping off r&d by going to wiesco directly.

they are definitely not the same as the r&d flattops

Hey Lee how are they ripping R&D off? R&D stopped making Flattop Pistons for the Dominator motor and they said they don't plan on making anymore. The guy I talked to on the phone at R&D was a real a$$hole about it too. He wouldn't even give me any advice on where else to find them and basically just hung up on me. It left a real bad taste in my mouth about R&D.

riva has been making them for a while, r & d was supposed to hold the rights to that design. riva does not make anything, they just pay whoever to put there name on it. probably 80% of riva's parts are r &d parts with rivas name on it. ever wonder why you can't buy the 62t riva manifold anymore. probably the best manifold out there.
if r&d is not making them anymore, i am sure wiesco will allow you to buy them now.

i am only going by what i was told.

if they look that different i would not use them, i would go get a matched set from them. someone could have easily put the wrong piston in the box.

this is just another reason why i only use kawi pistons on my motors.
they maybe heavier but atleast there is some quality control.

They look both are forged but some details mismatch them.

The bore are the same for sure.

Well, it is already assembled.

I will call RIVA on monday and talk to any manager, maybe Ruthemford.

Thanks

you are both right . it was very hard to get the pistons for r&d so riva made some slight changes to them and called them riva pistons , otherwise wiseco would not make them for riva . anyone can do this if you want a custom piston they will make to your specs and only sell to you. since riva has made them we have had no problemn receiving them though and we buy at least 50 a year .

id be most concerned with the weight difference. did you weigh them before installing?

why call and speak w/ a manager if you already installed them?

Because this motor is in Brazil and it came wrong packed. When I DID see it was already like this. The mechanic installed it and we had to do it anyway.

The box HAS THE SAME LABEL, SAME PART # and SAME DESCRIPTION.

I didn't get "R&D PISTONS" and "RIVA PISTONS". I get both RIVA SS PISTONS.

I GUESS it was Riva's mistake, dont U.

thanks for all.

That's interesting because the piston without the coating has R&D Racing stamped on the top. :scratchchin:

I just ordered a set of Riva flat tops a few weeks ago and they both had the coating and matching serial numbers.

I'd say the problem may have started with Wiseco putting dissimilar pistons in the same box.

i agree that it was rivas mistake. but, now that theyre installed, what do you expect them to do about it?

Well, I buy a lot from RIVA... I guess they will honor myself with the best they can do.

Im not going to ask a new set of pistons.. I just need an word from RIVA TECH, WISECO, anybody that can explain what happened and I will not be surprised as a costumer if they give me a matched piston and ask me to give back to them the unmatched one after install it.

I guess that ANY customer, getting a set of spark plugs or a complete race ski, deserve this from a large company like RIVA.

Just a cent.

I agree with U 100%.

They got new pistons from Wiseco and didn't change the part #.

For those who doubt RIVA would fix it....

Even during World finals season and having a lot of people out of office, I got someone who found an way to fix the problem.

He didn't explain what happened but he got me a piston for free, I am paying for the S/h.

I didn't put the cyl head because I was sure that RIVA would ask the wrong piston but they didn't.

I will bring it to them just to prove that it wasn't used.

POINT TO RIVA

I also received 2 set of different pistons and weighted them.
So for your information here are the results.

new shape/design : 346g / 345g
old design : 319g /317g

all in grammes.

Hummmm. That's bad.
BTW. I had to pay for a new one and them get a refund when returned the piston.

Here's what I dug up trying to fix a short skirt issue. The 'proper' piston for a stock stroke lamey (I'm guessing) is the one with the longer skirts. Also they weigh less, 322g vs 358g. The one with the cut off skirts was exposing the exhaust port to the crankcase @ TDC, apparently not a good idea. What does everybody else use for these cylinders?

Flash-FX. For stock stroke Lamey's I get cheap WISECO KAW pistons and just cut the skirt to prevent it to hit the crank webs.

Those Kawasaki pistons in the picture have the skirts trimmed way up.

I think most people are using the Kawasaki flat tops for the stock stroke lamey engines. You would be wasting you money going with the Riva superstock pistons for that application.
