Freestyle Riding Training and general lifestyle change

So, long story short, riding the SJ is a F-ing workout when i first started. Now that im facing the offseason, im looking at gym time, healthy eating, and lots of gains. I started pushing myself the end of September, and am feeling awesome. protein shake or bar daily, loading myself with vitamins, and im up early most mornings for a workout, pull ups, pushups, abs, back, then shower and out the door. Plans are to bulk up, gain core strength which i need for riding, and looking better doesn't hurt. I know the girlfriend isnt minding this ;).

Right now im tall and light. i have maybe 5% body fat, am 6'9", and weight 185. Im looking for that 200 mark, which for my height seems good. I have very high metabolism, so weight gain is a challenge. since riding, ive noticed my back pains are gone, i dont get headaches, and my body feels wonderful! i do stretch daily as well which by itself made a very large difference and gave me lots more energy without feeling tired mid day.


any tips for riding exercises besides riding? im lost for what i should train specifically.

Get a mountain bike and start riding the trails. It really helps all around core. Cardio, leg strength, back strength. When I was not riding mtb much I would get the same lower back pain as I did riding/racing skis. More I did it the pain would go away.

If you go to the gym,l would do 2-3 spin classes a week,and round it out with body pump,Pilates or yoga a couple times a week.That seems to help me out a bunch.

Squats, deadlifts, cleans, weighted chin ups, and over head press will get you into the best shape of your life. As far as gaining weight I eat 25lbs of chicken a week and 12 eggs a day when I want to lose weight at 6' 230.

I hit the gym 4-5 times a week and do a push/pull/legs split. I would say all back exercises would help with riding, especially if you are riding with a short pole. Work on some deadlifts, rows and pull downs. These exercises will really help if you are learning how to flip and fall off a billion times, and will make getting back up a lot easier.

Lol, not sure what is going on in that picture (my phone showed it as a pic, not a video). I assure you that is not a crossfit movement. In a legitimate crossfit gym you will have multiple crossfit certified trainers helping you learn and perform functional fitness movements. This comes after everyone goes through a full gamut of stretches, mobility training, and warm-ups before you do the workout.

An example of crossfit movements are: deadlift, back squat, front squat, overhead squat, power clean, squat clean, snatch, squat snatch, thruster, pullups, pushups, ring dips, muscle-ups, handstand pushups, kettlebell swings, burpees, box jumps, wallballs, toe-to-bar, jump rope, rowing (concept 2 rower), running, etc.

If you can't do these movements without getting hurt, you're doing it wrong. That's the plain and simple truth.

Can you get hurt in crossfit? Yes. Does crossfit give you the instruction and assistance to perform every movement safely? Yes. Can you get hurt on a stand-up ski? Yes. Are you going to ride a couch? I doubt it.

"With caution" l would let others know that if you are over 30 and never have done any crossfit workouts to either start slow or not at all.That coming from a chiropractor that has seen his business grow directly from more injury's occurring from CF.(not me)

No doubt,crossfit is an awesome way to stay fit and on your game,just do it with caution.Only wish l was young enough to do the workouts.

I did xfit for almost a year and enjoyed it. But it is a horrible way to workout and not for everyone especially beginners. However, if the xfit gym offers a strength or Oly class that leaves out the WODS it is a great way to learn for less money then paying for a PT. If any trainer tells you to do high rep technical lifts after doing sprints and/or burpees, slap the Kool-aid out of there hand and walk away.

A person has to know their own ability and use their head. If you can't do a proper deadlift or power clean after doing burpees, you're just plain doing it wrong. Proper form comes first. If a fast time is a higher priority than proper form, then that is your own fault, and that is how people get hurt.

If you are deadlifting or doing power cleans after burpees you shouldn't be giving workout advice... Also check out this guys blog I think you will get a kick out of it.
