Removing Couplers...without the tool

The engine is the easy one and can be done with the rope trick and no damage done to anything. Unless you have the appropriate tool, you're going to gouge up the midshaft getting that coupler off though. For the midshaft, I found that putting it in the freezer for a couple hours and then heating the crap out of the coupler itself with a blow torch will create that extra gap to aid in removing the coupler. Then either some TIGHT visegrips or a good vise on the midshaft just behind the coupler will hold everything while you whack on the coupler with a hammer. I haven't had any luck forcing the midshaft coupler off...always had to hammer those.

Hockey sticks work really well. they give you good leverage and they will be able to be put in your pump and the wood wont ding your impeller if you are careful.
