How the heck do I take this off?!?!? (its a kawasaki 900zxi driveshaft that is threaded.)

shops told me it would be between $80-$150 just to take the coupler off the driveshaft.

I stuck a really strong pin through that hole in the shaft right behind the coupler, then wrapped a towel around it all to prevent scuffing and clamped the shaft and the pin in a vice so that it would hold the shaft tightly and not spin in place.
Then I heated the bejesus out of the around AROUND the driveshaft on the coupler, trying to avoid contact with the driveshaft itself.
I took an old coupler I had laying around and got the dampener, and stuck it in the coupler on the driveshaft just like it was in the hull. Then I put a big pipe wrench around the outside of the junk coupler and it came right off.
Putting it in the vice with that pin is the only way I could hold it tight enough, and not cause any damage to the driveshaft. I've done a couple of them this way without any troubles!

Or you could just mail me the shaft and a money order for $75, I'll cut you a deal! I'll mail them back apart!
Just kidding man. You can get it off, just have to have the right tools and some patience to set it up.
I'm sure there are much easier/better ways to make it happen, thats just how I did it.
Also, Watcon.com sells a coupler removal tool that will just connect to a ratchet, and fit right into the grooves/splines whatever you want to call them on the coupler. Kawi does too, but theres is just a stock coupler with a plate welded onto it that has a 3/8" hole for your ratchet. May be 1/2", either way you can just use your own coupler from the other side if you have it.

Yeah thanks man that idea sounds pretty reasonable. I mean its a kawasaki driveshaft with the kawi coupler. I am putting a yamaha coupler on that kawi driveshaft, so I need it to be okay. Do you know if the driveshaft on the kawi is standard thread? and what would i use to heat it up with, a torch?

Thanks,
good info btw

hah, well whatever I do, the driveshaft has to be okay. Dremel sounds like eternity...If their is a way, I will find it. So far I like the idea of heating up the coupler, then taking it off with the vice...Thanks for everyones input...
