Rebuilding a stock 701.. please advise

hey guys, tonight i finally got around to putting my stock 701 together. for my sj I got a wsm top end std kit with new gaskets. I honed my cylinders, painted all my parts. I put the cases together with the crank, and i installed the pistons with rings via the yamaha repair manual.

I got the cases bolted down to specs with a new base gasket. I added some oil to the cylinder walls so the engine would be lubricated and i spun the engine by hand. This is where i get confused on what to do: i started to notice on both cylinder walls in the same general area of each other a colored line running down from the top of the wall to the bottom where the piston bottoms out... it spun smoothly and i didn't get any hesitation or grabbing of the rings on the side. compression felt good with the head on

Will it harm the walls or do i need to break in the motor? or should i take the cylinder off and reposition my rings or can i leave it like this and run it? i tried to rub the spots and they wouldnt come off, but they are not digging in. Aslo when i coated the walls with oil and i would spin the crank 1 rotation or more, i would get a line of oil on both cylinders in that same exact spot. please advise...thanks

some pictures i took of the lines before installing the head. the dark one is of when it leaves a line of oil, and the other one is the mark its leaving, the other cylinder looks the same.

Your not gonna be able to spin your rings, there are pins where your ring end gap meets. I personally put my motors together dry, but as long as there aren't any grooves and it's not binding up, run it.

i suppose if you didn't line up the locating pin, or installed them upside down. But I would guess you would have had one hell of a time getting the cylinders on if that were the case.

i installed them with the writing up, and i used a hose clamp to compres the rings, and they slide into the cylinder very easily..so im not sure

Sounds good so far then, if the locating pins were not lined up, you wouldn't have gotten the cylinders on. Most likely would have broke a ring. As long as its smooth an doesn't bind up you should be alright bro.

Just to make sure; you did encounter the locating pins in the piston grooves? Did you alter the ring end gap by any chance? If so did you knock any burs off after filing?

You shouldn't need to install your pistons with a hose clamp, the chamfer at the bottom of the sleeve should compress the rings with a little persuasion.

I saw the ring Pins and I didn't moddify anything. I put the rings on the pistons, and I used the hose clamp to compress the rings into thegroves while I installed them into the cylinder. Ididnt know they would stay stuck in with persistance. If anything I'll take the top end off again and reinstall the ring without the hose clamp
