Reading pistons

OK, I assume the forward (right) cylinder is more what you are supposed to see but I have no clue.

What do you see?

(should I reduce my premix ratio?)

(oh, I just fogged the cylinders so that is why it seems wet)

One other thing, when I install the ADA head do I need a gaket of any kind?

(I assume no b/c of the use of O-rings, but I would rather know than assume).

Dont change the mix of your fuel, when they say the right cylinder is rich, it is the fuel air mixture not the oil/gas mixture they are talking about.
The right cylinder has been rich (more fuel to air than needed) and this can be adjusted by leaning out (turning in) the hi and lo speed adjustments respecitvely on the carb.
Search this and the other site about carb tuning and piston wash. Group K has some good articles online too. Carb tuning is a science (art?) and do not just start twisting speed adjustments. Read up a lot and this will give you some better directions.
Good luck!

The low speed adjuster is not used for leaning out the low speed circuit. It is for idle mixture adjustment. You adjust to obtain the highest RPM idle under load.
You adjust the low speed with jet size.

Read the Mikuni tuning manual - that will go a long ways.

I was wondering if it was too much oil due to both cylinders being darker (not a light brown). I think the burn pattern on the front is what it should (maybe a bit more to burn off), so my thought was because it was so dark it was too much oil + rich.

I guess the darkness comes from too much fuel thus not all fuel is burned -> buildup.

Matt,

Already downloaded and I have skimmed it a few times. I will be upgrading carbs to 44s some time next year (Jan/Feb-ish) so it will be a whole new ballgame.

Should I clean off the deposits to have a better read on tuning the new carbs?

I don't know. Honestly, I don't see what harm could be done by taking some emery paper to the piston crowns. They should clean up nicely.
But be aware that it will take a few runtime hours to establish a pattern.
I don't think you can use piston wash as an immediate carb tuning tool.
Personally, I tune carbs by obtaining best idle speed, then observing off idle throttle response and picking the best low speed jet(s) for this. (I.e., the sequential order that Mikuni suggests)
