It is easier, I have done them with them on, but much easier. Go to sears or lowes and get you a stubby 12mm wrench, makes carb removal much easier.

make sure you have a screwdriver that will fit the screws in the carb very well when you take them out... then really press hard so the screwdriver does not want to start to come out when you crank to unscrew... the screws in the carb can strip fairly easy and are usually a little stuck... so this will help....

I take the carbs off when I change jets... never tried it with them on...

for exactly this reason i suggest removing them to be on the "safe" side

x2 on the stubby...or if you've got an old 12mm just cut it

a hammer impact works well on stubborn carbs screws.

I have a kit of Taskforce tools that I got when I needed some stuff in a pinch, and it has a screwdriver in there that is about 5-6" long, and the handle can be attached to a 1/4" drive ratchet. It allows the ratchet to fit snugly in your hand, and you can really press it onto the screw while having a ton of twisting leverage. You can put any bit you want onto the end of the screwdriver, and you can also use any 1/4" socket on there too. Kudos to the cheap tool kings for that.
