I've had a shady situation even WITH a lanyard.
Sometime last winter we were riding in 35ish degree water and 20ish degree air temps.
After a while, the throttle would freeze open.
The only way to get back to the ramp without going WFO the whole time was to lay in the tray, start the engine for 1 or 2 seconds, then kill it again.
Once I got back to the ramp, I pulled the lanyard....only to find that the lanyard post had frozen in the up position.
Bad combination of events. I decided to quit for the day.

Different sport but similar effect. We were up riding our snowmobiles in the mountains a few years ago and conditions were perfect for building ice on the carbs. Most of our sleds had heated carbs to prevent it but one of my buddies had an older mxz without the heaters. After a short rest stop, he walked over to his ski, pumped the throttle a couple times and grabbed the pull cord. Little did he know, the carbs stuck open and his ski fired up on the first pull and roared away with his lanyard still attached to his bars. It was the craziest thing to watch as his ski went about 250 ft before cutting a swath thru a small clump of trees and then disappearing over a small cliff. We took lots of pics and yes, he rode it out with a bent trailing arm, twisted tunnel and broken bars.

Even after that event, i am still the only one to attach my lanyards to myself. They still all leave it on the post or wrap it up on the bars.

A buddie of mine had his lanyard get wedged in between the throttle lever and the grip. Plus it was a cheesy lanyard, so it pulled off his wrist and took off only doing maybe 15mph. We caught it quick and got it shut down. So that's something I keep an eye on is the clearances around the bars. Just try and make sure it can't wedge in anywhere that can cause a problem.

Most of the time...good. Sometimes bad.

I was riding with Idok, Butti, Aircraftsalz, & I think it was when Sanoman was visiting. I forget who was towing who, but I was just following along as they headed back in. I was keeping an eye on them and not the waves. Got rolled. Close to the rock jetty. Reached up to stick the lanyard in...got rolled again..and again...I was dangerously close to the rocks when I finally got it in and fired up.

Sorry to hear of the loss. Glad it wasn't what I thought it was gonna be about!

we run the lanyards HD ziptied to the PFD
on the front. that seems to work best
unless you want to do qu33r hood tricks
