Question: Rear main seal on sj

I break stuff
Have about 5 or 6 tanks on my Able stroker and the rear main seal fell out. Noticed it was crooked when flushing after saturdays o-side ride (see video by matt smith)
So, can I just split the case with the cylinder on? Or do I have to tear down completely? Not sure how easy it is to find Able gaskets, anybody know?
I poked the seal back in place to flush, but I do not dare ride it like that. WTF? I though these things were keyed in or something. Looks like I have to go non-stroker till I get it fixed up, eeeewwww...
Help?

Eh....I think you may be able to do it without taking off the cylinder. Gotta get the flywheel & stator off, bed plates off, then split. The bearing pins are on the top cased half, so that works okay. Just have it upside down, resting on the head.
Am I missing something?

I think what Matt said should get you going. Are you running a small coupler? They generate more heat and can cause the seal to pop out.

Good call on the coupler Matt. I wonder if alot of oil or grease was between the seals causing them to pressure up and pop the outside seal out? I always just lightly grease them and keep the void between nice and clean. Never had a problem yet.

Thats what I wanted to hear. Don't wanna pull the cylinder. I have no idea if there is alot of grease in the void, as I did not build it. I am running the big coupler, and it is aligned well.
Hopefully I can pul it weds. or so. I will order parts today.

If that's the engine I sold you, I was running one of those small billet couplers on it... never had a problem though.

If you wonder what's inside, send a pm to zforce227 on the old board, he assembled it.

I just had the exact thing happen to me. What these guys told you to do it too the T of what I did. Well except i didnt think about the staor being screwed in and I broke it... luckly my buddy wleded it up.

I dont have impact wrenches either... did it all buy hand :smile: be sure to heat up that cuplor before you try to wack it off. It really helps. Other thatn that make sure you line up the pins and put it back the way you found it lol.

Hey man, it rips pretty good. Good smooth power that is great for wave riding. Everyone that rides it comes back with a big grin. The best part is with stock 44's, lightened 62t flywheel,msd enhancer and a b-pipe I can go 2 hours in the surf. It exceeds my riva 790 superstock in fuel consumtion.
All I have been able to find out is that the crank seal is aftermarket and are prone to this. I ordered a full set of oem's. Its out on the bench waiting for parts.
I wanted to try the riva 790 with stock 46's and the speedwerx freestyle dry pipe anyways. We will see.:biggrin:

I had one pop out... Not sure why it happened, but I just pushed it back in there and rode the bitch... It was my last ski, not much into the motor... Good luck. I would just remove the entire motor, set it on a small stand and crack the case open w/o removing anything but:

starter
flywheel
stator

that should be a very simple, yet time consuming task..

Yeah slut, thats the plan. Nobody had a set of seals in stock so I had to order them. I don't think I would trust that seal with the amount of $$$ I have in this engine.

Better remove the coupler first!
