Question about shortened turnplate???

So I'm trying to figure out how I can move myself as far forward on my ski without buying a new handlepole so I've got a couple of questions.

1. Does the UMI shortened turn plate put the steering 2in forward while the standard UMI steering plate doesn't put the steering forward at all?

2. Do you have to modify the chin pad when using a shortened turnplate.

3. If you buy straight handle bars will this move you forward another 2in?

4. This may sound like a stupid questionm, but by using a shortened turn plate and straight bars will this actually move you forward a total of 4in? That seems like a lot for not even having to buy a shortened handlepole.

5. If you don't have to modify the chin pad just for a shortened turn plate will you have to modify the chin pad for a shortened turn plate and straight bars?

1.) Std UMI plate is stock location. Shortened plate is -1.5in I would guess.

2.) I didn't have to. Some do.

3.) No. Straight bars with the XMW plate will move you about -2.5in over stock/std - guessing (that's what I run now)

4.) No. The shortest you can get with the steering is putting straight bars very close to the bearing. The XMW system does this. It's about -2.5in over stock/std. It's a cheap way to shave off some length, for sure.

5.) Maybe...never ran a stocker pad with the XMW straight bars. I imagine you would run into issues with the pad mounting column. You can cut into that, though.

What does the x-metal plate come with? Does it come with the straight bars that are pictured with the plate?

114.99 seems a little expensive for just a plate. The blowsion shortened turn plate is only 49.90 and wamiltons is only 49.95.

What makes the x-metal so much better than the blowsion and wamiltons turn plate?

go to sergio at xft, he has the whole system for a resonable price with bearings and everything. it is made to run strait bars i belive!

I moved the holes in my stock plate forward, and put straight bars on. It made the steering 3 inches shorter. I did have to shave a little off the chin pad when I had a square pole. I put this on a round pole and pad, and didn't have to modify it.

156 seems like a good price for the whole system. It sure beats the price of the UMI.

From the picture it doesn't look like you can run straight bars though.

Yeah I think thats what I'm going to do. At first I thought it was 115 for just the plate, but I think its actually 115 for the plate and bars which is a pretty good deal.

I was planning on turfing my pad anyways.

I think the stock pad will stick out prett far past the new shorter steering. I don't have a pole ski so maybe someone can give you better idea of what to expect/do.

Yeah I'll just cut the pad down when I returf it and I'll be good to go.

dont forget you need the UMI steering with aftermarket plates too, an additional ~$125.

(unless you custom rig something up to use stock/other bushings)

So in the end its about the same price.

Complete UMI steering (190) + Bars(60) = 240

X-metal system with bars(115) + steering system (125) = 240

i modified a UMI turnplate on my wifes square to run straight bars. i think i left about 3/8" between the bar and bearing housing. the pad had to be modified but it came out really nice.

to get rid of the 'overbite' that the chidpad had, i mounted it in front of the 2 bosses on her ac pole. then i screwed the front of the pad down to the pole. its very clean looking.

Keep in mind the Xmetal bars and plate do not come with bar clamps or screws.... thats another $20 or so going to UMI. :bs2:

Just did mine after having the UMI set up prior, didn't realize his kit didn't come with these and I couldn't get the bars/clamps off the UMI plate so had to order after receiving my stuff from XM...... another week wait. :banghead:

Using the stock pad, it hangs past the bars @ 2"....... or 1.5" from the highest point on the steering plate. Also like others have said. you'll have to grind a little of the cable side pad mount away for steering cable clearance.
