I have made many PVC stands in my time. Lessons learned are to not drop them or drop ski's on them, or let a friend with a couch use one.
1 1/2" is fine if it's well designed, but two inch is better. All of mine have been inch and a half. This is a really old stand that I've repaired a few times with glass and epoxy. The front two toilet adapters are removed to enable setting the stand on a banked angle. I have a 1/4" hole drilled in the top of each upper elbow to allow air to escape so that it settles in quickly.
The other two adapters sit on my shelf and it's an extra stand for the winter. I make all my stand up and X2 stands at 12 1/2" on center.
