This thread....

picked up a 440 and SN.

the 440 rides ok... takes a while to get on plane w/me on it.

met a few other stand-up riders, cool guys and got to see The BOB.

I had no clue about the aftermarket industry. didn't know you could spend north of $10,000 on a ski.

stunned every time i see a "used" Ninja offered for more than $30,000 (and then it sells).

This thread will record my progress going forward.

goals:

- power 180 and 360 in both directions
- slides in both directions (in surf and freestyle stance)
- 180 off boat wakes, wind swell and setup wake
- stabs in both directions (no holds)
- subs (no bilge or scupper)

the caveman on the ski looks like he's riding an old dinosaur 440/550. hardly the top of the evolutionary food chain. that shirt is about as up to date as the monkey in figure #1. the sport has evolved leaps n bounds since the inception of that evolutionary graph shirt. i'd be embarrassed to roll a shirt that advertized cool and a JS hull all in the same breath. my bad it says COAL! WTF? but i still wouldnt wear it.

to the OP, sounds like the most stable minded plan i've seen on this forum in a while.

Most flatwater "newbs" jump right from the 440 to a souped up flatwater competition boat and then try to learn. I'm a big follower of the learn the basics and gain some knowledge along the way before progressing to flips, rolls, etc.

Ride the hell out of that square and find another hull to build up (squarenose/roundnose) Build a mild limited 701-771 with 62Tcases/61X ported cylinder, High compression head, (MSD enhancer, epic, or total loss) with stock 38's and a b pipe and ride some more.

When all that gets old in a couple years, jump on someone else's lightweight/big power setup. If that seems like its for you once you progress your skillset, then sell everything you got and buy one of them.

Good luck and keep riding!

Someone with more experience has been adamant not to go am hull (as you have also suggested) at this point.

I'm selling everything I own and sticking with a crusty old square. With jetworks 771 power and a solas mag though. Great surf boat that I don't feel bad bashing on.

Thanks for sharing Kal Lake Local. I love my beat up old square nose and its completely stock. I love slashing around seeing how far I can slide or carve before falling. That and the WAVES!!! I say just throw in an electric bilge and some footholds then leave the hull alone and shred! Build up that drive line and when you're ready drop it in to whatever am hull you choose. Shred easy!

550/440

Maybe I'll get it all the way around NEXT time....

Definitely try some short hulls before you buy, I have a EME that very few of my bigger (I'm 6'3" and 205lbs) friends can even ride. Too short for them to get up on plane, and as "nose proud" as she is, it is a definite learning curve for most.
