porting 61x cylinder

Can someone tell me where and what type of porting bits to get? Maybe put a pic. up of what your using and where you can get them? I am going to port match a 61X cylinder myself for the first time this weekend. :biggthumpup:

Look for the Sport Port thread. I think it's in the Tech FAQ.
I am still red-necking it with a Dremel, but it's worked well for me so far.
I use Aluminum Oxide stones on the sleeves (I think it's AlOx). I use carbide cutters on the casting for fast material removal, and Sanding discs for small stuff & finish.
If you are going to use a Dremel for it, you will need the 90 Degree attachment for a port match.
If you are not planning on boring the cylinder after you're done, I suggest laying off the coffee several days in advance.

Thats encouraging. Where do you buy your bits? Will the right angle attachment attach to the cable attachment? I looked at the right angle deal the other day and could not figure out if it would hook to cable attachment.

I got the dremel setup w/ the wand and the 90* end too... It totally rocks.
 
Fordam foot operated flex shaft, get one from McMaster Carr,not cheap but it will last forever,I'll post a pic up when I get home tonite....
You can also get the right angle attachment, tons of rotary files, also McMaster carries the sanding roll kits to finish..

Cool, I bought the cable attachment and a couple bits that Lowe's had. I will go back and get the right angle attachment tonight.

BTW, have you seen the Protec 650 port work? I know you and Mouth were discussing this. Toby has a Protec built 650 motor in his garage and we were checking it out. It is basically port matched at the exhaust but then has like finger sized cut outs on sides of ports. Crazy looking.

It increases exhaust port area without getting too close to the water jacket, I imagine.

This motor hits hard too for a 650. I really wanted to take it apart for pics., but not worth the gaskets as I dont see myself spending that kind of time on a 650 cylender.

any one have a link for some bits for this. i want to pick a few up to do some work on my pump. and possibly a cylinder if i feel lucky. are they the file type bits? or stone bits?

i thought the stones were bad cause they explode.

I have had good luck with stones. I only buy the original dremel stuff, everything else is junk. I buy the orange color stones.
If you use them on aluminum, you need to use porting wax (I use candle wax :rolleyes:) to prevent the stone from gumming up.
Sanding drums are....well, sanding drums.
The carbide bits are all metal, and cost 10-15 bucks a piece.

Another piece of advice... when you grind, be sure to wear some gloves and long sleeves. The metal shavings can be so fine that it gets stuck in your hands and arms. They hurt like a mother!! I mean these shavings are small. Especially watch out when you go to brush yourself off. Wear some good gloves!

Good points.
Please, do yourself a flavor and wear gloves. Surgeon's gloves do the trick nicely. Also, it is mandatory to wear fully enclosed safety glasses. This isn't just a silly safety dance - I have had metal pieces in my eyes more than once before I learned.
Additionally, wear a breathing mask. Or, get used to picking aluminum boogers.

I've had the same thing! One time I was grinding this two inch spot on my brother's car. I go out that night to the bar, went to sleep about 2:30AM, got up for work at 6:30 AM. I couldn't even open my one eye!!!:bigeyes: :bigeyes: WTF I thought? I finally pulled it open but I couldn't keep it opened. It just kept tearing up and closing. I went to the eye doctor and here they found a piece of rust in my eye. They had to put my head in this fixture so it wouldn't move and then they took this battery powered dremel to my eye ball!!!:17: Talk about scary. From then on... glasses for everything!

i use a die grinder with carbide bits. i keep it wet with wd40 to prevent cutter build up. Works great. Remember the coarser the cutter, the more its going to want to jump and walk. Use a medium cutter to rough it out and then go to something finer to finish it up. I like to use cutters shaped like this

As for the glasses, I still had an occasional shaving get into my eye even with normal safety glass from it coming over the top glasses and then falling into my eye. I started using old MX googles and never had an issue. You can bury your face next to it if you are doing something detailed and never have a worry.

Those are the carbide bits I was referring to.
I am using fully closed safety goggles...no problems there.

Oh and this:
They had to put my head in this fixture so it wouldn't move and then they took this battery powered dremel to my eye ball!!!

I use a stihl 026 with a carbide attatchment.

ok, so I dont, but it looks like i do.

straight air die grinder for some of it where it fits, and a cheap dremel knock off with flex shaft in the tight spots.

Ive got a bunch of 1/8 " shaft sanding drums and carbide bits that I use.

Need some more small sanding rolls, I need to goto wally mart!

Interesting I have a protec ported cylinder and I dont think it has those. It is 6m6 701 bigbore so maybe they couldn't do it because of the bore size and the water jacket. Who knows. I did talk to protec about thier porting and they said when they did it would effect how it was ported. They said when they would find something new that worked they would implement it so they basically were changing thier porting technique all the time. Also means that it was almost impossible to give me jetting specs without them actually seeing the cylinder
