I thought those cables are suppose to be secured to the hull somehow. At least at either end.

If it's not, the cable will move around a fair amount.

Secure the cable.

EDIT: if the cable is secured, sounds like a break.

Won't help at all. They are mounted just like everyone elses. The problem I am having is that the ball is not sitting perfectly in the end cap (its locked in, but there is slight play).

It's a moving part. All moving parts break eventually.

IMO the only thing you gotta worry about is the threading. Give it a shot and let us know how it goes.

Great find Chris, so they press over the ball mounts on my steering nozzle and turn plate?

I did those on my dad's square, along with drilling out the steering nozzle pivot holes and making some bushings that fit in with no play, it works awesome. Keep in mind that the holes in the mcmaster carr ends are 5mm so you'll have to drill a new hole in your nozzle and plate or figure something else out as the stock holes are 6mm.

hey kr i cover the ball with a plastic bag before putting the cap on. tightens it up ez and free.
Nice. How long does that last?

not to highjack the thread, but i actually ground down both ends of my steering cable, and extended the notches on my steering plate, and moved the ball closer to the nozzel. i get huge throw now with super quick steering. has anyone else done this?

Before you start throwing parts at this, have you actually checked the steering cable itself for play? As they get older, they get sloppy. Certainly the ball joints have play in them as well but my old 750 cable used to move 1/4-1/2" without even moving the other end of the cable. Granted that cable only lasted a few months after I noticed that but don't rule it out.

The point of those eye bushings is that you use a screw to go through the bushing instead of a ball joint. A sleeve designed for a specific diameter screw will have much less play than a ball joint held in place by a spring loaded cover.
