PFP Temps

Is there a target temperature for a PFP chamber when running wet? You have the temp strip on the chamber, but how accurate is it since the chamber is jacketed and the heat has to transfer through? I’m running a 70 jet right now and I don’t think I’ve ever seen my temp strip go past 122 degrees on the chamber. I think it usually reads 113 actually.

Also, last time I went out, I went to tighten the FCV and noticed I had it pretty much closed. My waterbox never goes over 131-140 range. I tried to test the pressure required to open it completely closed and it seems to be about 5-6 psi when it starts to leak. I tested a jetworks valve and it’ll hold a lot higher pressure so guess I should swap it out?

I was running wet because my 865 didn’t respond well to the dry pipe (power was very laggy) and I was much happier this way. I’m on an 1105 now and was debating going back to a dry set up.

For ref a #70 jet on my carbon pipe puts temp at large diameter of pipe about 170/180 a #60 hit 190/195

My water box with jetworks fc and a retricter was 130/140 deg, couldn’t get it much hotter but it was hot enough for me...

don’t want detonation from either

I personally don’t think tuning based on pipe temp Or water box temp is the right way to go but I’m far from an expert. IMO you should use temp as a monitor to make sure you aren’t melting couplers and tune for best performance without exceeding reasonable temperature thresholds.

I’d strongly recommend running that pipe dry with the 1105. You might lose a touch of bottom end snap but you’ll gain way more up top. You’ll likely need to adjust your riding style a bit.

I was told 170F on the pipe and 150f on the waterbox for my 898. I have not done a lot of testing because I ended up mostly riding and wrenching on a different ski this summer.

170 degrees seems to be in the ballpark of what people say for just about any wet pipe as a "how hot should it be" I think it's just a rough "safe maximum temp" for wet pipes in general.

Thanks, I’m thinking the inner chamber on the PFP is probably closer to what you’ve got there.

This makes more sense for tuning honestly. I haven’t messed with it since I’ve had it on the 1105. I stopped at a 70 jet on the 865 because it felt great there. I do plan on running the pipe dry to see how I like it as well.

150 is what I’ve heard for the waterbox as well. I can’t imagine getting the chamber to 170 though. This must be for a non jacketed pipe?

PFP pipe with the heat temp sticker stuck right to the outer jacket in the fattest section. I've got a size 60 main jet in the spray bar, temp varies a lot though usually it's cooler than that, sometimes it's hotter. I'm not very good at riding this ski so I spend a lot of time putzing around trying to make a decent setup wake, landing on my head, flipping over, start and go again. Probably would be a different story if I was raging combos back to back. I've heard of people using as small as a size 40 main jet though so I dunno. Probably depends on a zillion things.

Yeah I get what you’re saying. And I do have my strip on the fattest part of the chamber. I just can’t imagine getting it that hot unless I drastically change the jet. I know I have a 60 and a 50 so I could test those out at least. I do need to try checking it right after riding harder to see how different it is. I’m bad about going all the way back to the pier and then looking which is about a minute or so and I guess it could cool down by then.

Doesn’t look like a clear answer so far @ngerk. l am also interested to see some answers on temps. l just bought a cracked pfp and am going to remove the outer jacket and plan to use it wet on a pv735.So this thread can be helpful, but so far not any clear definition of correct temps, but maybe there is not a clear answer? Too many variations?

I can’t help with the pfp pipe but when I did a ton of testing different temps on my tnt v3 pipe, I found that hotter was not better as I thought. 170 on the pipe and 150 waterbox didn’t mean anything to me. I ended up just keeping the jet that hit the hardest for my riding style. Which for me was a large jet and almost no water at stinger.

Yeah kind of goes along with what @Jcary85 mentioned. I guess the same goes back when I had a B pipe. I never tuned for the first part of the pipe to sizzle or whatever they say, I just messed with it until I was happy and made sure it wasn’t too hot.

I guess my main concern has been how high some of the temps I’ve read vs where mine has been. Would be interesting to know how hot the inner chamber is vs the outer.

How big of a jet did you run? I found with the comp stinger on the pipe you wanted to tune it like a b-pipe. Just enough water not to steam. I just found the TNT to be very finicky on temp.
