pads under footholds?

Im gonna start turfing my footholds after I paint this week and I kinda pre-fitted everything and it seems real tight in there. My feet with normal shoes fit great without any turf right to the front of the hold. Are your feet supposed to go to the front with turf in too or do you lose a lot of room. I feel that if I turf the top and bottom of thr hold im just gonna be wedging my feet in a little. Im only a size 10. If I dont pad one side or the other which is better to leave unpadded? Top or bottom of hold. I like the idea of a foot imprint but I think most people use a thick pad and then thinner and all I have is the regular. Need some opinions.

Don't use padding if your foot won't fit. You'll definitely want turf on the bottom and a bit on the top but not necessarily the side. I'd recommend a little bit of padding where the top of your foot meets your ankle. You can sand it to contour to the foothold and should not affect the fit.

...and it doesn't matter if your foot goes to the front of the foothold as long as you like the way it fits. I have about 2" between the tips of my toes and the front of my kickers.

You definitely want to pad the top of the holds, but the bottom is not necessary except where your heel is.

Turf top and bottom.

Test fit with the shoes you are going to ride with.

k thanks, I obviously planned on turfing them but about the padding i'll just see how it goes when I do it. prob pad like you said towards the heal and sand down at an angle same with the bottom pad to make everything smooth and stick.
What do you guys do when you have a pre cut mat kit but the sides panels are not cut, where do you make you slices to fit it into the hold? Do I just glue and then start at the top work my way down and see how it wants to go in? I did turf on a regular tray before and it was a pita, I feel that this is gonna be he11.

I recommend two things to mod on Wamitons...

Add a hour glassed 25 mil sub pad, and on the bottom of the footwells. Taper 25 mill down to 8mill over ~3".

and put the botton mat on before the sides. Your view angle is straight down the sides. If you have a poor cut or size fit on the bottom piece you will see the white hull, if you do the bottom first an 1/8 gap is invisable.

This is how the wavejunkies have done our 3 (soon to be 4) stand-ups..

What they did with the pad is a great idea , the way its formed and recessed in the foothold area.
I'm glad i saw this post before i turff my footholds , i'll use that idea .

Thanks for that !

Derm, what's the point of putting thick padding everywhere EXCEPT where your feet are?!?!?!?!????
He hasn't gotten off his knees in the tray yet :haha: j/k

I have kickers and CG's, derm has CG's and some homegrowns. They are all very tight. A full sheet of the 25mm and scraps of 8mm - we did what we could with what we had... CG Racing is supposedly working on a new mold that will accept the 25mm.

Yeah............no offense but that looks pretty pointless.

yeah, the 25mm is great... I pretty much did the same thing that Derm did but had to mold mine a little differently because I customized my footholds. Also, I turf all the way into my footholds, then used a dremmel tool with a sander attachment to fine tune the front where my toes go. That way I got a nice fit for the boots I wear. I also had to shave the front area in the center down to 8mm as I added a front foothold.

Unless you have small feet and ride barefoot, i don't think you will get your foot in the hold if you use 25mm in the foothold.

However; I did taper mine down a little more gradual than Derms... so my heels are at about 16mm while my mid foot and toes are at 8mm...

I have Blowsion Diggers holds and size 10 1/2 feet and used 25 mm on my whole tray all the way into my holds .
I need just enough to tuck my foot in there real snug and the 25 mm works real good .:cool2:

When I paint my boat this winter I will add the 8m padding to the sides of the tray and the top of the foothold for a little ankle and foot protection .
Also I will add the 8m to the top of the rail and re turf that too for some elbow protection when remounting or in the no wake zone when I have to kneel down .
The 25mm feels so good in the half mile no wake when I kneel down .
I'm too fat to standup at no wake (230lbs)water cops are real strict too :frown:

On the other hand its easier to get the bottom piece to fit perfect.
I did sides first and have no gaps at *that* edge.
(some other places..don't look too close  )

I still don't see the point. Sometimes I ride with one foot forward (which would be in the thick pad area), but when jumping I am usually in the footholds. The only thing that 25mm pad would do is help if you fell and your knee hit the tray???? That's never happened to me...

I can see the point of perhaps not being able to put the 25mm inside the footholds, but putting it in places where your feet aren't doesn't make any sense (ie. would be the same if you simply left it out).

I would think you'd be better to put it right up to the edge of the foothold (ie. where the tray originally ended). That way your heel would be on the thick pad, and your toes would still fit inside the foothold. That would give some protection to your heel, but may feel funny (like riding in high heels  )

Yeah, I see what you are saying... I would love to have the 25mm in my footholds, but with my boots on I can't get my feet in. Like I said, I sloped it gradually from 25mm to 16mm to 8mm going into my footholds, that was the best fit I could come up with. At least I have 16mm where my heels are.

I think maybe if the foothold makers could start to consider thicker padding into future designs that would be cool.

But for now, yeah you're right... it's a comfy ride everywhere except where you really need it...
