I am looking to purchase my first ski to learn on. I rode my friends 550 to see if I would like it and I did but I was just wondering if the 650sx is a good starter ski that is versatile and reliable? Thanks!

I learned on a 650sx...it's a pretty crappy ride to be honest.

Get a 90-95 superjet if you want something inexpensive to learn on.

I hear that superjets are good ski's but they are hard to find a)in my price range b) I can't find any relatively close

So I found the 89 and fig. I would go look at it....it does have some aftermarket parts installed.

tough ride:splatt:
i have a 750sx and a SN and a buddy of mine has a 650sx
it is hard to ride
either a 750 or a SN will be a much better ride
but it beats a 300!

Well, you're right. It would be tough to find a superjet in that range. Just to give you an idea, I bought an 87 650sx about 3 or 4 years ago for $900. I bought a modded out one about a year later for just over a thousand I think. It is NOT an easy ski to ride for someone who is just learning. The plus side is that once you can buy an SJ, you're going to feel like a pro on it.

I had a westcoast pipe, 44mm carb, skat-trak prop on mine and it was powerful enough to learn on.

The one I am going to look at has mariner head, westcoast pipe, jetline prop, and a dual carb setup. All the fuel lines were replaced and it has new pump bearings. He is asking $800

That's a good deal and a good way to get started. If it looks good buy it, then start saving about about 600-800 more then dump it and get a superjet.

I learned on a 650sx. It was an awesome ski to start on and I still have it. Gave it to the boy for him to start riding on after I got my sj.

ya i like the 650 at full throttle there real stable and in the turns they kinda skid instead of carve. but buy that its a good price i think come with trailer?

it doesn't come with a trailer, my friend has a truck so we would load both of them in the back. What kind of aftermarket parts can be added to reduce skidding?

I have an aftermarket pjs rideplate on mine with 2 skegs that really helps stop the skidding and helps with turning as compared to my other 650sx that has a flat pjs rideplate.

I have one too, and I want to sell it but then I get all nostalgic and even thought there are a lot of people who say they suck its still a standup so for beginners its a cheap easy way to get into one. once all your friends who don't ski catch on- you have someone to sell it to when you step up and so on- dang now that I think about it they are like vws everyone has had one at some point and they just go on and on....cause they suck?

i paid $1050 for my 750sx
keep looking, in my opinion,
when the leaves start falling, prices start dropping!
