opinion on this poor mans version of a mag pump

had one on my Kawi 750. it adds pressure, and allows the pump to stay loaded in choppy white water.
in my experience, i noticed a very slight gain in low end thrust. barely any difference at all in calm flat water. but A huge improvement in choppy water. The pump didn't cut out at all.
You have to run a big hub impeller for it to work properly.

Not worth it. Get a hooker prop and bore your nozzle until you can afford a mag pump.

It does increase hookup slightly but when the hookup stops, it's very violent and unexpected. If you don't change props/nozzles, you'll experience a noticeable loss in acceleration. You would have to tune it to get the most out of it but then it's $375 for cone, $250 for another prop (or $75 for repitch), and a few different nozzles to figure out which works best. After all of that plus $200-$400 that you could sell your stock pump and prop for, you're pretty much at the price of a used mag pump. For the record, I sold my stock pump with a nice hooker prop for a little over $400 and bought my used mag with a prop for $900. If you figure in an extra $375 for the pump cone, I only spent an extra $125 for a real mag over a poor mans mag.

X3, I rode a ski yesterday that just swapped from the TBM Pump stuffer (same thing as the afterburner) and it was much better than before. Not the best riding conditions to really see either shine but more than enough whitewater to feel the difference in hookup.

At less that 500 for the solas it should be a no brainer. I ordered a new 9/15 hooker the other day the next thing is the solas mag.

The pump cone (stuffer) was an improvement, but i would not say it is worth the 375 your pay for it.
a while back, Mike at optimaracing.com told me he had the solas "mag" pumps for less than $500 shipped (no core needed). I've been saving my change and picking up bottles on the side of the road, ever since.

They do work but the price has to be lower now that there are better option for a bit more. A mag will still need all the tuning that waternut said so don't think a mag or Solas is plug and play. If you happen to be running a skat 12/17 - 14/19 c75 prop already, this part will get your pump priming faster in all conditions.

There have been close to 30 of the new Solas pumps sold since they were unveiled so there should be some good deals coming soon on used TBM's and Afterburner cones. If you really want to try one out, I'd hold out for a used one myself.

X2. Now I would not buy one new at that price but my buddy picked one up with a skat c75 last summer used for cheap. We put it in and yes there was a major difference in the way the ski worked.

what big hub prop pitch would you guys recommend , with this pump, um running stock sn hull (reinforced), 62t cases(ported) ,stock crank, 82mm 61x barrels(ported), wiesco forge pistons, lightened flywheel, riva high compression head, single sbn 44 carb, b pipe, msd enchancer, foot holds etc.
