Long story short I wanted to get a couch so I could ride with my friends at the annual camping trip each summer. Until I saw someone doing barrel rolls over a buoy on a stand up! So I bought stand ups instead. Figured I would start a thread to document my ongoing battle to keep these things running. Also might help anybody buying there first jetski with a list of what to check.

I have never worked on engines or anything like this before so if anyone has any Tips, Tricks, Criticism, Things I should do or do differently please let me know!

1985 JS550 Has never ran more than an hour before it dies and will not start until it cools down.
  • Complete Westcoast exhaust
  • One piece Ride plate and intake grate
  • HydroTurf
  • Primer
  • 150 compression both cylinders
  • rpm limited removed
  • Skat Trak 5 prop

What I have done to it.
  • Put on a kill switch with tether
  • Replaced fuel filler
  • Greased the zerks and WD40 everything that moves
  • Replaced starter (old one went out)
  • New spark plugs
  • New MSD plug boots
  • Rebuilt/cleaned starter solenoid ( was sticking and causing the wires to heat up super hot)
  • Replaced the bolts in the exhaust manifold! The :):):)-tard who had it before me used bolts that didn't reach the threads in the block and used silicone to hold the bolts in place..
  • Rebuilt the 38mm carb
  • While re-installing the carb last night I noticed that two bolts on the intake manifold are missing! wtf?!
  • New intake and exhaust manifold gaskets (Thank you SUPERJET-113)
  • Added Rule 500 with Westcoast Bracket
  • replaced water lines with clear braided vinyl lines
  • Added second ground wire to ebox
  • Replaced broken ebox caps
  • Replaced ebox gasket
  • Replaced all the fuel lines bypassing the selector and added an inline filter

Still to do:

  • This week the plan is to replace the fuel lines and by-pass the fuel selector switch.
  • I have an extra Ebox out of a 1990SX and will replace the CDI if it still wont run more than an hour
  • Install Westcoast waterbox.
  • Add Westcoast Velocity stack
  • Trying to find a Westcoast head if anyone has one for cheap?

1991 Superjet 61x 701 Has never ran for more than 2-3 tanks of fuel before it no longer starts...

  • MSD CDI
  • Coffman exhaust
  • Intake grate
  • Ride plate
  • HydroTurf
  • Stainless prop - no idea what pitch
  • Single stock SBN44
  • Primer kit

What I have done to it:
  • Rebuilt Start/stop switch
  • Sent ignition coil to JSS for new plug wires and boots
  • Replaced fuel lines added inline filter, bypassed selector
  • ProTec Head
  • Re-Routed the water lines so they are correct
  • Replaced headpipe gasket (old one leaked water
  • Added stock fire extinguisher holder
  • Rebuilt Carb

Still to do:

  • Rebuild carb with Mikuni kit (Thank you SUPERJET-113)
  • Add Rule 500
  • Quick steer mod or get a ProTec Nozzle
  • Looking for a Worx 201 if anyone has one for sale
  • Plan this winter is to send it to Jetmaniac or Art to have it ported for low end
  • De foam tray and add footholds
  • Figure out Electric gremlins! Need to figure out if I am having Stator, CDI or ? Issues.
Odd things about it:
If I hold down the start button it only sparks every second or two. If I bump the start button it sparks every time.
After replacing all the fuel lines it ran the best it ever has for 3 tanks of fuel, and now it's not getting fuel. (Turns over when I prime it)

Rebuilt the carb on the SN and still wont start. Every once in a while it will start to sputter like it wants to start and than nothing.. It will also backfire.

While I was trying to start it I noticed the ground wire on the batter was starting to smoke. So I took the ground off and attempted to clean it and instead cut the ends off and put on new connecters:

Next I am going to go through the ebox, clean and put dielectric grease on everything. When I opened it up I noticed it had an MSD CDI. Does Anyone know if testing the MSD CDI is any different than a stock CDI when following the SJ repair manual?

Does it only backfire when you release the start button?
Thats usually a sign the msd is bad and swap it for a oem.

Also have you checked your reeds and pulled the flywheel, look for a sheered woodruff key. Check your timing on the stator while the flywheels off. You should have no more the 2* advance(counter clockwise) If any at all.

I still have that 6m6 cdi and will prolly be at the afterbay friday night.

Try switching the two white wires coming off your MSD ... I did the same thing on mine and it would spark when hitting the start button and when letting off the start button and not in between ... It would also backfire ... I switched those two wires and boom ... Started right up ...

Team Cheeseburger
I've seen / heard about so many MSD box problems from cars, to jet skis, etc...
I'd start there

As for the 550... run the fuel line from the gas tank directly to the carb.
Cheap, free and could possibly fix your issue

Update!
JS550 is running! YaY! Although it is running hot so I need to buy an air compressor so I can blow out the lines. also big shout out to @Burton148 and his freinds for helping me tune her.

SuperJet is still not running. However, on the advice of MSD I ran a wire from the Enhancer to the ground on the battery and it had a constant hot spark and not just when I let go of the start button. So the question now is if the stator is bad or the wire is just bad. (Not looking forward to pulling off the flywheel)

Its not that bad to pull the flywheel. Rent a steering wheel puller/flywheel puller from oriellys. Dont screw the three bolts into the flywheel far or you will go right into your stator. I usually put some rope into the front cylinder to lock up the motor. And make sure you use #3 phillips on the stator screws. They strip easy and might need some penetrating oil.

Hows the blaster going.

Pretty sure the bolts are broken off. :(

Don't rent a puller, just go down to HF and buy one. Remove the gas tank. If you have some time before you know you are going to be pulling the flywheel get some PB Blaster and start soaking it.

I was going to try this but one white wire is male and the other is female so you would have to add new connectors.

Took out the JS550 and SN today. Burned up a whole tank of fuel trying to tune the JS550. I had it running great last week and than I messed with the jets to try and get more out of her and now it has no top end....

I added a ground to the MSD enhancer on the ebox and now it has great constant spark! Not sure if it was from tuning the carb or giving the MSD fuel spark but it felt like it had 25% more power than before.

However, after running it for an hour with zero issues. I took a 30 minute break and than it wouldn't start. Priming it would kick it over and that was it. After letting it sit for an hour + it would fire right up and be fine... It was a hot day and the water had to be 80+ so maybe it's a heat sensor issue?

I think I finally got them working perfect now! Only issue I have had in weeks is I snapped my SJ pole.. I have about 4 tanks of gas through both and they fire up first try every time and run great! YaY!

So now I just need to figure out my blaster... Was dieing when I would push down on the back, removed about 3 feet of fishing line from around the drive shaft and it would run great until you would fall off and than it wouldn't start at all.. bring it back to shore, starts right up and runs great as long as you are on it...

Update!
SJ Cracked the bottom of the hull after some hard water slaps. Reinforcing and footholds soon.

Blaster reeds where burnt up and have new ones on the way.

JS550 runs perfect and is actually a-lot of fun!

Between the two Sockets. It is bad enough that I could see water coming in through the crack and after a few minutes the hull had about 4 inches of water in it. Dual cooling? :D

Just got the Carbon reeds for my blaster! So my curse remains. Can only have two skis running at a time. Any bets on if the 550 or the B1 will break once I get the SJ going again?

it nice having a backup to a backup ski.i use to have 5 skis at one point, but to maintain the skis was just to much to handle.so after giving my skis to my kids i ended up with 1 rn sj..which is much easier to maintain and i could dump more money into my ski which i have done....but don't give up,in the long run it will pay off...

....ps...
