Oil help?

I just got done riding my js 550. I worked on it for 3 hours down at the launch to get it started. I mixed up some premium gas at 32:1 with Penzoil outboard motor oil. It would run for a second and then quit. So I checked the filter to see if it was wet. I dried it, put it back on, same problem occurred. So I got a new set of plugs and swapped them. Then it ran good as long as i stayed on the gas, as soon as would die or I turned it off it would not start again. I pulled the plugs and they had some oil residue on them. I think its the oil, but Im just looking to get some other opinions before I drain the rest from the tank and run some better oil. Thanks

Nothing wrong with the oil other than mixed a little heavy for a basically stock engine, 40:1 should be better.
But shouldn't be your problem with just a plain outboard oil, 550 piston port engines with the BN38 or 86' and up BN44 carb are very fussy to having the carb in perfect working order and tune and I mean perfect!
You must have new needle valves, pop off spring, rubber diaphram and float arm, and be set at the proper height. Use ONLY genuine Mikuni rebuild kits and parts.
Also engine crankshaft seals, cylinder compression, charging system and stator bad, weak or bad battery and/or starter and engine not turning fast enough can also cause this hard starting and no idle quality.

Well I drained the the penzoil mixed gas and replaced it with 40:1 Amsoil dominator gas. Took it down to the lake and it wouldnt start. So I pulled the plugs dumped a little gas in and it ran for about 20 seconds with no problems then died. So then I checked the fuel line, no fuel was getting to the carb. So I bypassed the filter and now fuel is getting to the carb. I also checked to make sure the pump was working and it is. So I tried to start it and it still wont start. Any more ideas?

Sounds like you have a fuel problem either with the carb or fuel supply. Is the stock rev-limiter fuel bypass still hooked up or do you have a restrictor jet in place of it? (goes in the return line back to the tank)

we got a 89 piston port js that has been passed around the local group for years now. you gotta check everything supertune said because these piston port need to turn overfast for usually three to four seconds before it feels like starting. we put a spacer plate on the intake so we could run a sbn 44 off a 701 single carb superjet. that ski has seen alot of hours and unimaginagle amounts of abuse and all on a crank that should have letgo 6 years ago when i redid the topend. i think that a carb upgrade is the best thing for them old skis, if you can get one off of someone for free or dirt cheap then the spacer is lie 30 bucks i think from wetracer. i hate them old bn three screw carbs. you need to know magic to set them up.

nice, i would imagine the resrictor rev limiter doohickey has been removed then. maybe time for a carb cleaning/inspection/rebuild. check the pulse line?

You may want to check you pulse line for holes or if its unhooked at the case, also take the carb apart and look for junk inside, I know what you are going through, I still have my 550 but the patience to work on it is gone, it just sits in my garage I would take it to a local guy for carb issues it can be a pain to get it juuuuuuuuuuust right. keep at it you will figure it out...

Well I finally found the problem. It has a primer on it, and the little plastic T fitting where it goes into the main fuel line was broke off, so it wasnt getting gas. It was just sucking air. Thanks for all the help.
