Custom/Hybrid OEM pump shoe installation

Since I hear it is pretty important to get the pump shoe installed correctly, I've been searching for a few hours for a write-up on the installation. I've found nothing. No threads, no videos. I'm going to put the OEM Yamaha pump shoe on my Backie Chan.

Anyone care to give some details? Any grinding usually necessary? What size screws are used? I made the mistake of letting a bunch of needed parts and hardware go with my RN so I am now in a holding pattern until I can get some of this stuff.

Thanks.

Update: Added pictures in a later post of a mock-up installation.

Can't you just call Steve and find out how he does them? I was searching for the same thing when I was building my Footrocket, if you can find that thread there's some good info in there.

I found the thread about the shoe in the Footrocket but its not an OEM shoe, if I recall correctly. I have a hard time believing I am the only one who would like to know how the more experienced builders do this.

Is this correct? I only got the pump sitting in and held with 2 bolts, just snug. I am thinking this is not correct since when I place the intake grate in, the holes don't quite line up. I did have to hit the pump with my hand to get it to pull up so the bolt holes lined up. The shoe didn't appear to move any when I did that. The shoe is not glued in yet and I would prefer to hold off until I get a yay or nay on how this looks. I can take more pictures if needed.

looks like you got it figured out. Shim your motor and your pump, then use the pump to set the placement of the pump shoe. You want to use the intake grate also to control spacing there as well.

I have never installed one... My chan had it already installed, though I had to elongate the holes in my wear ring and reduction nozzle to fit. Kinda wish it wasn't installed so I didn't have to do that. It will make replacing either part a bigger pain in the ass.

Would you have to use a thinner gasket for mockup and install? OEM is pretty tight and squishes the rubber gasket some. I would be afraid if you just bolted it in and screwed in place you may have a air leak and get cavitation.

I'm going to be using 5200 to glue the shoe in. There were no gaps around the pump seal or between the shoe and hull when the pump was in. Used the normal pump seal when test fitting, too. Didn't need to open any holes or anything.

I may have done it all wrong, and I started with a oem bottom. I cleaned and prepped all mating surfaces. I used a aluminum pump shoe and got by with just using 80 grit paper to fit the shoe. Took longer, but there are no gaps. Dry fitted several times and checked grate spacing. Then 5200, screw in place and filled any remaining voids. When I installed pump with new seal it was tough, but once in I have a perfect tight seal to the shoe.

the pump seal needs to be "compressed" when everything is lined up correctly. Not let any light through whatsoever

When I dropped my pump in, it was quite compressed. I had to put a little weight behind it. Here's hoping I've got it all right.
