where is the best place to ride the surf on the Northern California coast? i've been out to moss landing and mavericks a handful of times but its been like 5 years , not sure if you can still get away with riding out there.
Pismo is probably your closest place to go. I'd HIGHLY suggest humboldt bay (5-20ft on the north side of the jetty, seasonal of course). but the water is frigid, in the low 50's at best.... oh... and a couple great white sharks every so often.
No dice at Mavricks or Half Moon Bay. Pismo is your closest bet. I used to launch on the beach right next to the Half Moon Bay harbor/jetty in the early 90s. I bought a new ski in 96 and they outlawed the ridding there in 97. DOH. In 97 I was harrassed a couple times by the cops but never got a ticket. They said it was a new law, and I pleaded ignorant. Never pushed my luck but I would say no dice. Ridding in a Marine Sanctuary will have everyone's pannies in a bunch. I belive no costal ridding from Sonama county down to Pismo.
I just moved south and now I get harrassed down here
Can't win
yeah... the San Fransisco area is a "hippie-rich" enviroment. Pretty much don't bother in Marin, San Fransisco or Santa Clara counties. You will likely have a small protest if they sence you in thier marine "sanctuary".
I've never been to pismo, but I heard it's great.
If you're up for a road trip, O-Side is great, as is point loma. Both are in the san diego area. Dana point is rumored to be decent as well (i've never riden there).
I live in Long Beach and ride primairly in Oceanside. Sometimes I launch right here out of Long Beach and ride to Surf Side. I will be in Pismo in October : http://www.x-h2o.com/threads/5179
Hopefully competing. You should roll down for some surf ridding.
Zone and Access Routes Within the Sanctuary Where the Operation of Motorized Personal Watercraft* Is Allowed
The four zones and access routes are:
The approximately one nautical mile squared (NM²) area off Pillar Point Harbor from launch ramps, through harbor entrance to the northern boundary of Zone One bounded by flashing 5-second breakwater entrance light and horn located at the seaward end of the other west breakwater.
The approximately five NM² area off of Santa Cruz Small Craft harbor from harbor launch ramps, through harbor entrance, and then along a 100 yard wide access route southwest along a true bearing of approximately 196- (180-magmetic) to the whistle buoy.
The approximately five NM² area off of Moss landing Harbor from harbor launch ramps, through harbor entrance, and then along a 100 yard wide access route due west to the eastern boundary of Zone Three
The approximately five NM² area off Monterey Harbor from harbor launch ramps to the seaward end of the U.S. Coast Guard Pier, and then along a 100 yard wide access route due north to the southern boundary of Zone Four.
